Be it known that we, Bnnnos M. TERZIAN and WILLIAM HUGHES, citizens of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Blacking-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a blacking brush, and more particularly to the class of fountain blacking brushes.

The primary object of the invention 1s the provision of a brush in which liquid blacking 'substance may be fed to the tufted bristles of the brush, so that the said blacking may be applied to shoes for the polishing thereof.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a blaeking brush in which the stock of the brush has detachably connected thereto a fountain containing blacking, the liquid being controlled by means of a finger operated valve, so that the supply of liquid may be regulated for determining the amount of the supply to be fed to the brush.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a brush of this character which is simple in construction, handy and practical in operation, and inexpensive 1n manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blacking brush constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View through the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the brush stock with the fountain removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the blacking brush comprises a stock 5 in which are suitably mounted the tufted bristles 6, the same being arranged concentrically with respect to the center of the stock. Provided in the body of the stock 5 is a suitable recess, in which is fitted a feed tube 7 the same being passed through the contracted end 8 of the stock, which latter is surrounded by a ferrule 9 formed with an eX- ternally threaded nipple 10, the latter being suitably fastened to the feed tube 7, and detachably connected with this nipple 10 is a font or reservoir 11, the latter being preferably cylindrical in shape and has its upper contracted end provided with screw threads similar to the threads on the nipple 10 for detachable engagement therewith, whereby the font or reservoir 11 may be connected with the stock 5 of the brush. This font or reservoir 11 serves as a handle for the stock of the brush.

Slidably fitted upon the feed tube 7 at its delivery end and confined within the stock 5 is a sleeve 12 having a contracted closed end 18, provided with an aperture 13 and with a resilient valve or stopper 14, the latter being adapted to close the delivery end of the said feed tube 7, and within this sleeve 12 beyond its contracted portion and surrounding the delivery tube 7 is a coiled expansion spring 15, the same being confined between the said delivery tube and the sleeve, and has one end working against inturned bearing ears 16 formed at one end of the sleeve 12, and its other end engages an annular shoulder 17 formed on the feed tube 7 spaced from its delivery end, the spring 15 being adapted to normally hold the stopper or valve 14 in position for closing the delivery end of the feed tube.

Provided centrally in the stock 5 is an orifice 18, the latter intersecting the recess receiving the delivery tube 7 so that upon the opening of the stopper or valve 14 liquid fed from the font or reservoir 11 through the feed tube 7 and aperture 13 may be discharged in the bristle 6 of the brush, whereby the latter may be used for daubing blacking upon shoes or other articles.

Rising from the sleeve 12 is an eye 19, the latter slidably working between guide wires 20, suitably fixed in the stock at opposite sides of said eye, the latter being engaged by a hook or nose extension 21 of a finger operating lever 22, the same working in a suitable opening formed in the brush stock 5, and is connected therein by means of a pivot 23, the latter being engaged with the' brush stock. This lever above the back of the stock 5 is formed with a finger knob 24, so that the finger of a person may be engaged therewith and upon depressing the lever open the valve or stopper 14 to permit liquid material to be discharged from the font or reservoir 11 through the feed tube 7 into the bristles 6 of the brush.

The stock 5 of the brush comprises a disk-shaped body 25 in which are suitably secured the tufted bristles, and this body 25 is detachably secured to a back, including separable sections 26, the latter being connected at the front of the back by means of a removable screw 27, and at the rear end of the back by means of the ferrule 9, the adjacent or meeting faces of the sections 26 being formed with the recess in which is mounted the feed tube 7, which latter is held fast in the said recess by means of a clamping plate 28, which latter is carried by one of the sections 26 of the back. It is evident that by forming the back in two sections, it enables the ready and quick assembling of the feed tube within the recess receiving the same in the back.

\Vhat is claimed is:

Abrush of the class described,comprising a circular-shaped stock having tufted bristles secured therein and containing a certain perforation, separable back sections carried by the stock and having a bore therein communicating with the said perforation in the stock, means connecting the forward ends of the said sections, a ferrule surrounding the inner ends of said sections, and having an outwardly extending threaded nipple and an inwardly extending feed tube located within the bore, an annular flange on the feed tube near its discharge end to provide a shoulder, a sleeve surrounding the feed tube and slidably fitted thereon, the said sleeve being provided with a contracted end normally engaging the shoulder, a resilient plug fitted in the contracted end of the sleeve and normally closin the discharge end of the feed tube, a coiled expansion spring surrounding the feed tube between it and the said sleeve and having one end bearing against the shoulder and its opposite end against the sleeve to normally hold the resilient plug in closed position with relation to the discharge end of the feed tube, an eye formed on and rising from said sleeve, a finger actuated lever pivoted between the back sections and engageable with the eye for moving the sleeve in a direction to retract the plug from the discharge end of the feed tube, and means detachably connected with the threaded nipple for supplying fluid to the feed tube.
