My invention relates to a lock which may be advantageou'sly'used for the special pur` poses aforesaid in that it may be manually changed vto be operated by different main keys of a numerous series, Without beingdetached 'from -such'a box, and includes detent mechanism, .having ,two independent functions, subject to the control of'a master guard key, to Wit, first, preventing or per mitting such changes in the lock, and, second,- preventing or permitting the operation of the lock'by the specific main key for which it is set. In said figures; the lock casing- 1 has the removable face plate 2 detachab connected by the screws 3 with the casing frame 4. The main rotary plug 6 having the keywa 7 for the main key 8, and the series of ra ial pin tumbler sockets 9, is journaled in said frame 4 in which it` is retained at the front end bythe circumferential flange 11 having the notches 12 and 13 to permit said key 8 to be inserted and withdrawn in the respectively locked and unlocked positions of said plug 6; said flange 11 being fitted to the notch 15 in said ke so that the latter must be inserted to the ull extent indicated in Fig. II before it or said plug 6 'may be turned in said frame 4. Asvshown in Fig. III said plug" 6 has the crank stud 17 at its inner end which fits in the slot 18 in the shank 1'9 of the slide bolt 2O as shown in Fig. VI, so that' said bolt may be shifted back and forth by the rotation of said plug 6. Said slide bolt 20 has the slot 21 engaging the stud 22 on the slide late 23 which as shown in Figs. II and V I is arranged to slide in the frame 4'transversely with respect to the direction of motion of said slide bolt 20 and has the spline 25 fitted to slide in said frame 4 to maintain it in proper position in said frame. It may be observed that saidslide bolt 20 cannot be shifted in either direction unless said slide plate 23 is tionary in the locked position shown in Figs. I, II, III,`VI and VII. The pin tumbler sections 28 in said sockets 9 of the main rotary plug -6 are rounded at their inner ends so as to readily slip into and out of the angular notches 29 in the main keys 8. The length of each of said tumbler sec tions 28 equals the radial thickness of said rotary plug 6 beyond the keyway 7, and the extent of said plug sockets 9 radially beyond said tumbler sections`28 is filled by the changeable unit pin tumbler sect-ions 30 whic are each as long as the minimum diference in depth of said key notches 29, and, as shown in Fig. II said sockets 9 are filled to the radial extent of the plu 6 with different numbers of said changea le pin tumbler sections 30 in accordance with the diferent key notches 29. Said frame 4 has the strai ht series of ymain in tumbler sockets 3 which register wit -said bearings 26and thepin tumblers 271when l slide plate '23 is in locked position as shown in Figs. yII and VII. Said' sockets 32 contain pin tumbler driver sections 34 which are pressed' toward the rotary plu 6 by rel spective springs 35 so that when t e proper key 8 is inserted in the keyway 7 as shown in Fi II, the tumbler sections 27 which exten in the bearings 26 of the slide late 23 and are coextensive with the thic ess of the latter, do not project from said plate, and the latter may be shifted` back and forth by engagement in the cam slot 21 in the bolt shank 19 as the latter `is shifted back and forth by the crank lstud 17 on the mam rota-ry plug 6, as the latter. is. turned by the key. However, when said key 8 is withdrawn with the bolt 20 and slide plate y 23 in said locked position as shown in Fig. II, said springs 35 shift the pin tumblers 34 and 27 toward the plug 6 to engagethe slideplate 23 and said plu 6 in theframe 4 and f revent their unloc 'ng movement. Referring to Fig. II it may that when the deepest notches in the key 8 permit the sections 28 to assume their innermost position, but three ofthe changeable tumbler sections 30 are required to-ill'the sockets 9 to the radial extent of the plug 6. However, four such sections are-'provided for each notch in the key 8, the extra ones always remaining in said auxiliary sockets 54 as driversfor the other sections 30 which pressure of said springs 55.
The sole function, of said detent 37 being to normally engage and detain the slide bolt- 20 in its protracted, locked position; the normal extent of the unlocking movement of Vsaid slide bolt 20 is limited by the detent 58 when in the position shown in Figs. yV

subject to the control of the guard rotary i plug 40 which must be turned by the guard keyv 42 to the abnormal position shown in Fig. IV, wherein the cam 49 on said plug 40 releases said detent 58 from engagement with the shank 19 of said bolt'20 against vthe pressure -of said spring 60 to permit the turning movement of said main rotary plug 6 tothe position shown in Fig. IV to present its sockets 9 in registry with said auxiliary sockets 54 and thus permit a changeof key. -Said plug 6 being thus turned with the main key 8 to register with said auxiliary sockets, said key may then be withbe observed A -drawn, and, a new main key with dilerent -notches 29 bein vnotches are ille thus set for'operation by said -new main key.
l It is tovbe understood that the number of jditferentmain keys to which such a lock may be thus set is only limited by the perlm'utability 'of the tumbler sections 30, which :bear an aliquot relation to the depth of the notches 29 in all of said series of main keys.
The form ot my invention above described operates as follows 'The lock being set for the main key 8 to present the tumblers 2T vin the position shown in Fig. II; and, the master guard key 42 being inserted as shown in Fig. II and the lock being in the normal 'locked position shown in Figs. I, II, III, VI
and VII may be unlocked by first turning theguard plug 40 with said key 42 to the position shown in Fig. V and then turning the main rotary plug 6 with the main key 8 to the position shown in Fig. V. If the guard plug 40 is then returned with the guard key 42 to the normal position shown `in Fig. VI, before said key 42 lis withdrawn; upon returning the slide bolt 2O to the locked position shown in Fig. AII it cannot be .again unlocked until said guard plug is first turned as above described. However,
said detent 37 may be omitted to permit the lock to be repeatedly opened by the mam key 8 without the repeated use of any guard key. In other words, the embodiment of my invention shown and described may be instant-ly changed from a double key lock to a single key lock by merely omitting said detent 37 without disturbing any other portion of the lock. This feature of my in vention is obviously advantageous when 1t 1s desired to temporarily permit one person to open a safety deposit box to open which the presence or consent of two persons is normally required;
In the operation above described the `person having the master guard key 42 would have control of both of the aforesaid functions of the detent mechanism, to wit, first, preventing or permitting such changes 1n 1 the lock tumblers as to adapt the lock to be opened by ditl'erent main keys, and, s econd, preventing orpermitting the operatlon of ,the lock by thespecific main key for which it is set. However, under some circumstances, lit is desirable to have sald two functions controlled b different persons provided with respectively different keys, and,
providing the guard plu mani ulation as to said two detent means by two e s respectively designated a change guard ey and a release guard ke Such operation may be conveniently e ected by eral recesses 62 and 63 w ich are indicated in Fi II, VII, VIII and IX and which/` exten circumferentially upon respectively opposite sides of dit'erent tumbler sockets 43 in said plug as indicated in Figs. VII and VIII; sothat when the tumbler sections 55 are thrust from the plu 40 to the circumference of `the latter y the master guard key 42 as shown in Fig. II said plug may be turned in either direction to operate either of said detents 37 and 38, but, when said tumbler sections 55 are thrust tothe position shown in Fig. IX by the release guard key one of sa1d sections 55 engages said plug to the depth of the recess 62 so that, although said -plug may be turned by said release guard key in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. VIII to release the slide bolt shank 19 from the detent 37, by the cam 49 of said lug 40, to permit the opening movement 0F said slide bolt 20; said guard plug 40 cannot be turned in the opposite direction because of the engagement of said tumbler section 55 therewith.'
On the other hand, by the insertion of the change guard key 66 indicated in Fig. X all of the tumbler sections 55 are thrust out-` the sockets 43 in the plug 40 as shown in' Figs. VIII and X; they may be `otherwise formed, for instance as indicated at 67 in Fig. XI. Said recess 67 extends at right angles to the axis of the socket 43, and, it may be observed that although such construction, of said recess 67, is less costly, the local tumbler section 55 is moved by the plug 40 as the latter is turned and may be worn unevenly upon its end which comes in contact with said plug.
I do not desire to limit myself to .the precise details of construction and arrangement herein shown as it is obvious that` various modifications ma be made therein without departing from t e essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claiins.
1. In a-changeable key lock, the combination with a casing; of a main rotary plug,
'having a keyway and a straight series of B5 radial pin tumbler sockets; two straight se- 40 with periphnism arranged to normally limit the rotary movement of said main plug to registerwith the main series of casing sockets but to abnormally permit rotary movement of said plug to register with the other series of casing sockets, and, to normally prevent the opening movement' of the slide bolt but abnormally permit such movement; and, a guard rotary plug having a keyway, a single straight series of radial pin tumblersockets and pin tumblers, constructed and arranged to control and operate said detent mechanism.

plurality of tumbler sockets each lhaving a' -peripheral recess extending circumferentially at one side thereof, said recesses of dilerent sockets extending in respectively opposite directions; tumblers in said casing engagin the respective plug sockets to the depth o the respective recesses; whereby, rotation of said plug is prevented by said tumblers; a key arranged to fit in said keyway and shift such tumblers out of engagement with said plu as to` permit rotation of the latter in one inection; another key arranged to fit in said keyway and shift such tumblers out ofen agement with said lug as to permit rotation of the latter in t e opposite direction; and, a master key arranged to fit in said keyway and shift such tumblers out o'f engagement with said plug as to permit rotation of the latter in either direction.

In a lock, the combination with a casing; of a slide bolt; detent mechanism arranged to normally limit the movement of said bolt; a rotary plug havinga keyway, a plurality of tumb er sockets eachv having a peripheral recess extending circumferentia'lly` at one side thereof, said recesses of different sockets extending in respectively opposite directions; tumblers in said casing engaging the respective plug sockets to the depth of the respective recesses; whereby, rotation of said lug is prevented by said tumblers; and, a key arranged to fit in said keyway and shift such tumblers out of engagement with said plug as to permit rotat-ion of the latter in one direction.

In a lock, the combination with a casing of aslide bolt; detent mechanism arranged to normally limit the `movement of said bolt; a rotary lug having a keyway, a tumbler socket, and)a peripheral recess extending circumferentially at one side of said socket; a tumbler in said casing engagingy said plug to the depth of said recess; whereby, rotation of said plug .in one direction is prevented by said tumbler; and, a vkey arranged to fit in said keyway, shift l.said tumbler out of -ngagement with said plug and permit rotation of the latter in a dlrection opposite to said recess. y
