Description

A. W. NICHOLLS. GAS TUBE TIP.
APPLICATION TILED JAIL 24, 1910.

awe/who's Quorum ALBERT NICHOLLS, F EAST NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
A To all whom it may concern:
GAS-TUBE m.
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. NIOHOLLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Norwalk, in the county of Fairficld andState of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Tube Tips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it make and use the same.
This invention relates "to an improved gas tip for connecting rubber hose to gas stoves. The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and eflicient device of this character with means for reliably clampappertains to ing it on the stove nipple.
With the foregoing andother objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts as will be more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of one form-of this improved tip; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof showing it applied; Fig. 3 is a transverse. section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 2. n Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the device shown in Fig. 4.
In the embodiment illustrated, the rubber tip 1 is provided with-a longitudinal bore 2 extending throughout its length and at its outer end on its outer face with an annular rib or flange 3 designed for reinforcing and strengthening the tip at its point of connection with the stove nipple 4. Arranged over this tip 1 is a clamping sleeve '5, the inner face of which is provided with a bore tapering toward its rear end to form a wedgelike clamping face for engaging the rib 3 of the tip 1 and forcing it firmly into engagement with the ni ple' 4, as is clearly shown in Fig.2. To acilitate the manipulation of the sleeve 5, it is provided on its outer surface with lon 'tudinally disposed ribs 5 as clearly shown 1n Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In the form shown in Fi s. 4'and 5, the
clamping sleeve 6 is prefera ly constructed of heavy wire coiled to form a cone-shaped member, the smaller end of which extends Specification of Letters Patent.

toward the rear end of the tip 1, which latter 1s constructed similarly to the tip 1 shown in Fig. 2. This hollow cone-shaped member 6 is slidably mounted on the tip 1 and is designed to be moved forward to clamp the rib or flange 3 of said tip reliably 1n engagement with the nipple "4 of the stove. A metal connecting tube or thimble 7 of the ordinary construction is connected with one end of a hose 8 and extends into the bore of the tip 1 from the rear end thereof. i
It will be obvious that by moving the clamping sleeve 5 or 6 rearwardly, the pressure exerted by their tapered inner face on the rib 3 is removed and the tip may then be readily disconnected from the nipple 4.
' From the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawmgs, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood withprinciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
I-claim as my invention:
1. A gas tube tip comprising a cylindrical elastic sleeve of even bore throughout its length and-having its outer end enlarged in the form of an .outer annular rib, and a clamping ring slidable on the sleeve, the interior of the ring being conical and flared toward the outer end of. the sleeve, the outer end of said interior being of sufiiciently great diameter to embrace the rib and the inner end of the same of less diameter than the rib, whereby when the ring is moved outwardly on the sleeve, the end of the sleeve, including the rib, will be tightly squeezed.
2. A gas tube tip comprising a cylindrical elastic sleeve of even bore throughout its length and having its outer end enlarged in the form of an outer annular rib, and a clamping ring slidable on the sleeve, consisting of a conical coil of heavy wire the interior of the ringbeing conical and flared toward the outer end of the sleeve, the outer end of said interior being of sufliciently great diameter to embrace the rib and the inner end of the same of less diameter than my hand in presence of two subscribing witthe rib, wherebi'when the ring is moved nesses'. outwardly on t e sleeve, the end of the sleeve, including the rib, will be ti htly ALBERT N C 5 squeezed and gripped by the coils 0 the Witnesses: ring. ' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set FRANK E. GERRISH,
