Be-"Jit known thatd, CHARLES K; Gom STEIN, a citizenlof Rumaniiuand a resident offthei` city and county of San `Francisco and 4 '53Statel of California,have invented new and usefull Im rovernents` t in` Davenpor'ts, of Y i whiclrthey ollow'in `is a specification.
Myyinventionre atesto davenports and hasfoi' its objecty to rovide in a device of 10; ,thejcharacter s ecifie improved means for `increasing, the ife'" of the'ex ensive plush, leatherlorother material used) in the settee formfofa said devices, to providean improved bedding-, an s improved Vmeans for taking A'15,apartandusing the separate partsfor variouspurposes andl'to rovide'improved means orwraisngwthehea Yof the s eeper in the bedmformxoi saidt devices. y I l'accomplish-my@objects by. the 'means ',2'012illustrated-inthe accompanying drawing, m

h'sam'enumera'l of reference marks the y Jsarnfapartl throughoutthe various views.
In 1generalterms, my invention consists in` thezcombiriationi of, -a separate( removable seatixrgirand!backingjpiece' with a fixed bed-A dilig'rconsistiagqcf springsfand' mattress ar-` '40 tranxdiin "a: novel manner, the
whole being com inedirl amannertada'pted to conceal the separabilityltof the tseatm'g and backing pieces-s It `alsotfconsists"in a bolster'fconcealed in 445v ythetarma` of ythe davenport when `the device is in its setteeforin` ada ted'to raise the head of tliesleeperrin the be formp It alsozconsist's `in the =novel parts, com- .binationsfand arrangements ydescribed in the f 150, :following dcscription', illustrated in. the zic-- companying'1drawingwand "particularly set `fortlfvin thetclains. Refringtothe drawing, IV provide a seatiing-tandrbcking piece 1, which is composed -5. :of theseatingpartf andthe backing 'part 3,
thesaidfparts ybeing adapted `to vlie `on and `sleeprs head, which turns down over the against corresuondingparts of the daven-ff port. The sai seating and backing piece is. composed of plush, leather, or lother suitablel material, and made soft to prssureby anyof the means usually employed, asstuihngv and tuftiug. I provide also `a bed frame', which is hinged along the line 5, whereby the part 6 may be turned up to meet the part,` 3 of the Vpiece 1, leaving the part 10 to Sl1pport the part 2 of the piece 1.- Springs v8` are provided in frame 4, vacross the to stof,` which is stretched a covering 9 of suitablematerial secured to the frame. Over the coveringr 9 is s )read asuitable thickness 0f7 floss 10 or simiiar material to a height somewhat above the top edge of the frame 4.11 provide a mattress 11, thcedge of which is covered with plush as at '12, or the same material of which the piece 1 is composed, with the object of concealing the fact that the niece 1 is separable from said frame; To 'fart 1er conceal said fact an extended portion 13 composed of thesarne materials as the piece l and tufted to corres 'ond therewith is adapted to bo secured to lille frame 4, and is split at 14 to correspond with' the dividing line 5 of said frame. `A long the edges front sides and back of thcexten'sion 13 are fixed the female parts of plasps 15,35 and along the edges front sides and back of the piece 1 are fxcdthe male arts 15fof v said clasps. When piece 1 is aid on'the` frame 4, and the back turnedup as in Fig. o, the clasps are causedto engage, which gives the davenport the appearance ofthe usual-' article sold by that naniewhcrein the back?,` ing and seating are permanently fixed tok that` r frame, because the clasps areA concealedb'yJ the plush or other material used `for the" 95 seating and backing. y A 'Directing attention now to the bolster, I
provide hollow arms 16, '17, whiohwhen closed have the appearance qfipwn inlFig'. 5. llingcd along the line :v -y, 5 is a door" 10 18, to the inner side of wich 1s fixed a -bolster 19 provided withlsprin'gs or other well known means for making 1t soft' to a mattress as shown in Fig. 4 andvis su l orted 105 by the mattress. `The bed frame@ s ligation` I' the bottom box 20 in the manner common I to many forms of davenports, so as to bringt the arms 16` and 17 in the center whenthe'u."x. hed is opened and the bolster 'thenflijsfdo directly under the sleepers head. 'I`heibol,4 5; 'i
ster is thrown upfinto the arm 16 when'the v'opening it.
'near the top. The seating portion 2 may be' then turned up over the backingl portion 3, and oneor two of the male clasps on said seating portion engaged with the clasps 2l and 22, which leaves the seating of :ornamental material out of the way and gives the occupant a bed of ticking to' recline on.
' Davenports constructed according to'the above description are easy to handle, safe in moving, the ornamental top can be used as a pad for a steel couch, and the mattress and bedfra-ine with the springs and floss may be fitted to any three-quarter or other size bed. The seating and backing piece can be removed with facility for cleaning and brushingpurposes, and its disuse at night gives it a longer life. f
Having described iny'invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, modifications within the scope of the claims being expressl'y7 reserved, is:
v1. In a davenport, an arin having a hollow space, a hinged door, and a bolster arranged on the inside of said door substantially as described.
2. In a davenport, the combination with an arm having a hollow space, a hinged door and a bolster arranged on the inside of `said door, of a mattress for supporting said door in its open position. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES K. GOLDSTEIN.
