To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, llIA'FlHlHV Vimmscnt, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful hiking Apparatus for Printing-Presses, of which the .tollowing is a specification.
This invention has referenceto inking apparatus for printing presses in general, and to improvements in adjusting the form-rollers with respect to the form when new and also after they have shrunk or expanded; it also relates to improvements in adjusting the distribut-ingrollers to the form-rollers and to each other for the purpose of adapting the vibrating-rollers to make close contact with thefornirollers, and the composition distributing roller with the vibrating rollers; and this invention also has reference to the means for vibrating the distributing rollcrsof printing presses and -to the construction of the bearings for the supplyrollers.
The invention and improvements herein described have particular reference to inkingmpparatus for printing presses in which the impressions are niade by means of a reciprocating form bed and an oppositely reciprocating oscillating impression cylinder having a movement to and from the plane of the'it'orin bed, such described in my application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 406,484. renewed December 14, 1907,,i'or iniprovenicnts in printing presses.

Another object. of the invention is to facilitatetheadjustment of the form rolls to the form; and this part of the invention consists in mounting them .in a carriage which is vertically adjustable for the purpose ofcompensating for the contraction and expansion .ot" the rollers from changes in temperature and other causes, and making a proper contact between the form-rolls and the form.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the adjustment of the distributing rollers with respect to the form-rollers for the purpose of maintaining a proper contact and pressure of the same on the form-rollers and rovide for adjusting the same yvhen the f drm-rollers are new and when they contract or expand and this part. of the invention. consists in mounting the distributing rollers in a frame, forming part of the carriage, above the forin-rollers, which is hinged to the carriage and provided with means for vertically adjusting the same. i
The invention consists in the novel parts, improvements and combinations herein disclosed.
The accompanying drawings which are referred to herein and form a part hereof, illustrate one part of the invention and serve in connection with the description to explainv the parts thereof.

The improvements in inking apparatus for printing presses ,which form the subject .of this application, are represented in connection with the improvedprinting-press described in my application for Letters Patent above referred to. By means of the set screws the upper part of the carringe'is adjustable vertleally, relative to the lower part.

This pinion is also in gear with an idle-wheel 4503-- mounted on a transverse shaft -'304. supported in boxes -305305- held in vertically adjustable frames 306(i which are inserted be tween the upright horns -285---285 of the lower part of thevcarriage which are secured to the boxes 305--305- by screws 307-30T driven through holes in the said projections and screwed to the boxes. The front sides of these frames bear against the vertical edgesof the side plates of the upper part of the carriage, whereby the box frames are held securely and firmly in place. The frames are adjustable vertically by means of set-screws --308--308-- which are driven through the boxes and bear against the bottom members of the frames The heads of the screws 308 are reached through holes '-30S"308*-- in the cap-- plate of the frame, so that by means of a screw-driver the screws can be made to move the frames down or allow them to be moved up when the lower part of the carriage is adjusted vertically.
The idle-wheel -303 is in gear with the gear-wheel -73- on the cylinder shaft to the left of the cylinder. By this geared con- Iiection, when the cylinder oscillates, motion is transmitted to the composition roller, and through the pinion -302-, to the vibrators -99? the vibrators are rotated they are also moved endwise by the engagement of the screwthreaded collars ----297--297 with the threaded block -l98--, and the vibrationsof the respective rollers are reversed by the forward and back motion of the cylinder.
By means of the set scrcws ---*287- the position of the carriage with respect to the slides -27t can be readily adjusted to regulate the position of the form rolls relatively to the form. Thus. whcnthe formrollers are new, or they swell or expand they hre'adjnstcd byfirst loosening the screws '.2t 2 and then screwing down the setscrews and lifting! the carriage lhercbyuntil a proper contact is obtained between the form-rollers and the form, and then tigrl'iten- 'ing the screws 2h2--2H2- to hold the car- 295. Furthermore at the same time the nuts on the bolts are loosened and the upper part of the carriage is raised by means of the setscrcws, and to lower them as the form-rollers shrink or contract, the set -screws are withdrawn more or less and the nuts on the bolts screwed down against the flanges to hold the upper part ---L-- steady, The composition roller is adjusted by moving the boxes in which the roller shaft is supported vertically by means of the screws, between which the boxes are held. From the filJOYQ description it will be seen that the adjustment of the form-rollcrsto the form and the distrilmting rollers to the form-rollers and to cacl other is easily effected without removing any of the parts and, as the form-rollers contract or expand in diameter they can be kept in proper position with repcct to the forms, by adjust- 7 and, as some of the parts have been referredto in the SPCClfiCtlfiOfl and shown in the drawings in the application for Letters Patent for printing presses, heretofore referred to, these parts will be indicated herein by the same reference characters.
The ink-fountain -TS fastened to the rear end of the frame just below the top. In an inkihg apparatus for printing presses, a carriage. having form-rollers mounted in suitable bearings therein, slides to which the carriage is fastens guides connected with the frame of the press on which the slides are supported, a reciprocating form-bed, an inking-table, a reciprocating and oscillating im ression-cylinder con nected with the carriage so that the form rolls are moved over and in contact with the form and inking-table during both movemcnts of the cylinder and the form-bed, means for applying and spreading ink on the inking-table, and means for moving the vibrating distributing-rollers endwise as the carriage is reciprocatcd, substantially as specified.
4. In an inking apparatus for printing presses, a carriage having form-rollers and distributing rollers mounted therein, slides to whichthe carriage is fastened, guides connected with the 'frame of the press on which the slides are supported, a reciprocating form-bed. an inking-table, 'a reciprocating and oscillating impression-cylinder connected with the carriage so that the form-rollers are moved over and in contact with the form and inking-table when the cylinder and carriage are moved in either direction, means for applying and spreading ink on the inking-table, and means, for moving the vibrat inc-distributing rollers endwisc as the cylindcr and carriage are reciprocatcd, and for reversing the direction of the vihrationof the distribnting-rollers when the inovci'nent of the cylinder and carriage is changed at the end of their run in either direction, sub- :tanl'mll) as specified.

In an inking apparatus for printing presses, a carriage having form-rollers and distributing-rollers mounted in suitable bearings therein, slides to which the carriage is fastened, guides connected with the frame of the press and means for adjusting the carriage vertically to adapt the form-rollers to contact with the form, sub-v stantially as specified.

In an inking apparatus for printing presses, a carriage having form-rollers and distributing-rollers mounted in suitable bearings therein, slides to which the carriage is fastened, guides connected with the frame of the press on which the slides are supported and setscrews passed. down through members of the carriage and hearing on the slides for adjusting the vertical height of the carriage and regulating the position of the form-rolls with respect to the form. substantially as specified.
