To all whom 'it may concern):
Beit known that I, SAMUEL W. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwater, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Safety Attachment for Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in safety attachments for pocket books.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of safety attachments for pocket books, more especially that shown and described in Patent No. 921,755, granted to me May 18, 1909, and to enable a pocket book to be securely locked or anchored within the pocket by a single prong, and to equip the safety device with a single operating member, adapted to be readily manipulated to operate the anchoring prong, and capable of securely locking the prong in its engaging position and of effectively preventing any unauthorized withdrawal of the pocket book, or accidental falling of the same from the pocket.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a plan view of a pocket book, shown in an open position and equipped with an automatic safety device, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the safetydevice detached, the upper and lower casings being in section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, taken substantially on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is an elevation partly in section of the upper portion of the device showing the parts in their locked position. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the main supporting plate, illustrating the construction of the guide and the lug for the slidable operating member.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, Vthe` safety attachment comprises in its construction a main supporting plate 1, suitably secured within a pocket book 2, composed of intermediate and end portions. safety device is preferably applied to the intermediate or central portion of the pocket book, and is adapted to be covered by the end portions or side portions of the pocket book in the folding thereof. The safety device, however, may be applied to any other form of pocket book, and of course the size and the arrangement of the device will be changed to adapt it to the character of the pocket book to 4which it is applied.
The main supporting plate 1 preferably consists of upper and lower enlarged end portions 3 and 4 and a narrow intermediate connecting portion, but it may be of any other configuration, and it is provided with a lower casing 5, open at the bottom to permit an arcuate attaching or anchoring prong 6 to project from the bottom of the pocket book and engage the bottom or lining of the pocket, whereby the pocket book is fastened within the pocket to prevent any unauthorized removal of the pocket book, or the falling of the same from the pocket. The arcuate prong is secured at one end to `a plate 7, pivoted at 8 to the main support- 'ing plate concentric with the curvature of the prong 6, which when projected from the bottom of the casino', is adapted to eX- tend beneath the same rom a guide 9 to a keeper 10. The guide 9 and the keeper 10, which are angularly related, preferably consist of lugs, formed by cutting the main supporting plate and rolled into eyes and are adapted to brace and support the anchoring prong. The keeper receives the point of the prong and forms a guard or housing for the same.
The pivoted plate is connected by a bar or piece 11 with a transversely disposed lever 12, arranged at the upper portion of the main supporting plate within an upper casing 13. The lower end of the connecting bar 11 is eccentrically connected to the plate 7 by a pivot 14, and its upper end is secured The l to the transverse lever 12 by a pivot 15.

The pivoted plate is automatically actuated to maintain the prong in a retracted position by means of a spring 21, secured at one .end to the main supporting plate and having its other end engaging a perforation 22 of a flange 23, formed integral with the connecting bar. rBhe attached end 24 of the spring is preferably passed through perforations of the main supporting plate, which is stamped or grooved between the perforations to permit the spring to be applied to the supporting plate without bending it. The spring automatically withdraws the anchoring prong when the operating mechanism is released and free to move, as hereinafter fully explained.
The slidable operating member 19 extends through a guide slot 25 of a flange 26, formed integral with the supporting plate and arranged at the upper edge thereof. The supporting plate is provided below the lever 12 with a projecting vguide lug 27 preferably formed integral with the main supporting plate, and the operating member has a corresponding guideway or groove 28, which, when brought into register with the projecting lug 27, is adapted to permit the operating member to be oscillated for actuating the lever 12 to project the. prong 6 and also to permit the spring to automatically actuate the parts to withdraw the prong from its engaging position. The operating ymember is adapted to be moved inwardly and outwardly or upwardly and downwardly through the upper and lower guides 17 and 18 to carry the groove or way 28 toward and from the lug 27 and the lower portion of the operating member of the lever is equipped with a plurality of notches 29, arranged to engage with the lug to prevent the operating member from sliding outwardly or inwardly over the lug'to bring the recess or guideway into register with the lug 27. The spring 21 is adapted to maintain the notched lower portion of the operating member positively in engagement with the lug 27, so that in order to manipulate the safety device, it is necessary to first oscillate the operating member and the lever 12 sufficiently to disengage the notched lower portion from the lug and then slide the operating member inward or outward to its unlocking position with its guideway or recess 28 in alinement with the lug 27. This will render it impossible for a thief or other person to remove the pocket bool; from a pocket without the knowledge of the owner. rlhe main` supporting plate is provided at the guide opening 25 with a projecting lug 30, forming a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the operating member 19. The operating member is also provided at its outer portion with a plurality of notches 31, adapted to form a guide for the owner to enable him to readily adjust the operating member, and designed also to confuse a thief or unauthorized person. In practice the safety device will be made in a number of combinations so that the knowledge of the structure of one safety device will not enable a person to operate other safety devices. The shoulder formed by the lug 30 is adapted to hold the operating member against the act-ion of the spring', and will retain the prong in its extended position and facilitate the manipulation of the operating member. After the operating member has been adjusted to carry the recess or guideway out of alinement with the lug 27, it is then disengaged from the shoulder of the lug 30 to cause the spring to maintain the inner or lower notched end of the operating member in engagement with the said lug 27 to prevent an easy inward or outward sliding movement of the said member.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety attachment for pocket books comprising a pivoted plate provided with an arcuate prong adapted to project from a pocket book, a pivotally mounted lever spaced from the pivoted plate, a connect-ing bar extending from the lever to the-plate and eccentrically pivoted to the latter, a spring' for moving the prong in one direction, and locking mechanism including an operating member mounted on the lever and having a limited movement independent of the movement of the lever, said member being mounted on and carried by the lever in the pivot-al movement thereof and constituting a handle for operating the lever, and means co-acting with t-he operating member for retaining the prong in its extended position.
2. A safety attachment for pocket books including a movable locking prong, a lever connected with the prong for actuating the same, an operating member slidably mounted on and carried by the lever and forming a handle for oscillating the same, said operating member having a groove or guide- Way, and a fixed lug or projection arranged in the path of the operat-ing member and adapted to pass through the groove or guide- Way, said lug being also capable of engaging the operating member.
3. A safety attachment for pocket books including a movable locking prong, a lever connected with the prong for actuating the same, an operating member slidably mounted on and carried by the lever and :forming a handle for oscillating the same, said operating member having `a groove or guide- Way, and a Xed lug or projection arranged in the path of the operating member and adapted to pass through the groove or guidevvay, said lug being also ca able of engaging the operating member, an the latter being provided with notches to interlock with the lug to prevent the operating member from sliding on the lever.
4. A safety attachment for pocket books including a movable looking prong, a lever connected With the prong for actuating the same, an operating member slidably mounted on the lever and adapted to be oscillated to actuate the lever, said operating member having a groove or guideway, a xed lug or projection arranged in the path of the operating member and adapted to pass through the groove or guideway, said lug being also capable of engaging the lever, and the latter being provided With notches to interlock With the lug to prevent the operating member from sliding thereon, and a spring for moving the prong to its retracted position and for maintaining the locking member in engagement with the lug.
5. A safety attachment for pocket books including a support provided with a projecting ange having a guide slot, said support being also providedat the slot With a shoulder, a pivotally mounted prong, a lever connected with the prong and provided with spaced guides, a slidable operating member mounted in the guides and extending through the slot of the support and arranged to engage the shoulder thereof, said operating member being provided with inner and outer notches and having a groove or guideway, a fixed lug or projection arranged in the path of the operating member and adapted to be received in the said groove or guideway to permit an oscillation of the operating member, and a spring for maintaining the prong i in its extended position and for holding t-he operating member in engagement with the fixed lug or projection.
