Description

G. G. THOMPSON.
TYPE WRITER.
, 1910. 1,004, 1 O8. Patented Sept. 26, I911.
#101 v hereinafter fully described and pointed out inthe claims.
PATENT OFFICE.
ITED STATES crazaa o. THOMPSON, or WINCHESTER, INDIANA.
TYPE-WRITER.
To allv whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA G. THOMPSON, acitizen of the United States, flresiding at Winchester, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement forthe Single Keyboard Type- Writer, ofwhich the following is a specification. I
V "space key and shi t-keys,. whereby thesame- This invention relates to certain new and usefulv improvements in typewriters,' and more particularly to thekeyboard, the object being to chan e the arrangement of'the can be manipulated with greater ease in order to increase the speed of writing upon the same.
Another object of my invention is to pro- I vide a keyboard in which the shift key is arranged centrally between space keys in order to allow the same to be operated by the'thumbyof either hand, whereby the disadvantages now existing of operating the shift key with the little finger is overcome, and the operator is able to holduthe shift key in a depressed position and operate with the other digits the adjacent keys.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a key-board in which the space shift-key,
specification: Figure 1 is a bar IS in ranged to the form of keys, one, being areach side of the centrally arranged and in the same horizontal plane which allows the same to be manipulated with greater ease.
Another object of my invention is to provide a shift-key which has a greater leverage than shift keys now in use, whereby the carriage can be shifted with greater case.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in thenovel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,
my invention is especially adapted to be. ap-

plied, but it is of courseunders tood that by slightly machines.
To the outer ends of the space lever D,I
secure by rivets the angled ends E, of a space-bar E which has secured thereto the s modifying the construction, the same could be applied to various kinds of ank portions F, of space-keys F which are prplferably riveted thereto, as clearlysho'wn an shown. By arranging the space-key inthis manner, the spacing mechanism can be op erated from either side of the machine, as
extend upwardly into the positionis now common in machines of this character.
In a l in In im roved shiftin ke to aReFriirigtfin m achirie, the shift kegs a1 ranged at the end of the shown, in the drawing, the angled ends G, of a shift bar Gare riveted to the same which bar extends parallel to the space bar F and normally lies in the same horizontal plane.
a shift key H, which extends upwardly and is so formed that it' will be normally'held i'n Secured centrally to the shift bar G is a shank portion H, of'
shift levers C, not
areremoved and a the same horizontal plane with the space;
keys, and also into longitudinal alineinent. By-having the space-keys and shift keys in the same horizontal plane .and arranged'as shown, the manipulating of the. keys is greatly facilitated.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is:
1. In a typewriter, the combination with the space levers and shift levers, of parallel bars having angled ends connected to the outer ends of said levers,
the other bar having a centrally arranged shift key.
2. The combination witha typewriter having a shift lever and 'a space lever at each end of the key-board, of parallel bars connecting the outer ends of said levers, a pair of space keys. carried by one of, said bars,
and a shift key carried by the other bar, said keys being in longitudinal allnement and in the same horizontal plane.
