Description

'nnn'ron v cnummnn, or RED BLUFF, CALIFORNIA.
eLorHEs-wAsHmG MACHINE.
Application filed July 18,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26. 191 1.
1910. Serial No. 572,658.
To allnghbmfifi may concern:
Beitjknownthat I, BENTON V. CRUM- mm), a citizen of tlie United States, residingat Red Bluff, county of Tehama, State of 7 California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ClothesAWashing Machines. u
Thejobjeet of the invention is, broadly, to
provide simple and efficient means for operating a clothes-washing machine, which shall be composed of'but few parts, which may be manufactured and sold at a moderate cost, and which shall be positive and re-. liable in operation, and not likely to get out of order.
The inventionalso contemplates the provision of simple and eflicient means for shifting, from place to place over the surface operated upon, the operating washing-mem-,- bers or pounders.
In the accompanyin drawing; Figure 1' is-a perspectiveview 0 my invention in op:
erative position, and 2 is a detached,. detail view of the washingsmachine pound ers. n 5 My invention is adapted to be used with washing-machine pounders, and, in the drawing, these pounders are shown as com-V prising t-wo cone-shaped, open-bottomed easlngs, an outer casing A, having a lower, circumferential rim B, and a cooperating inner casing I), carried toward the lower end of a vertical shaft E, extending through the casing A and projecting through a short tube C- carified at the upper end thereof; Interiorly of the cone D, there may be provided triangular-shaped braces g, extending radially from the shaft E to the cone I). Aroundtlietube G wfth its lower end resting on the outer casing A, which is loose on the shaft E and its upper end secured to. the shaft E by a pin H carried in an opening I by, said shaft, is a coiled spring J, of sufiicient tension to hold the inner casing up against the outer casing.
K-is a horizontal operatingdever, which is fulcrum-ed, by means of a pin M in a vertical slot'L, to shaft- E. Lever K is'provided, at its forward end, with a longitudi; nall extending, horizontal slot N, in which wor s a in P carried'by the end of the rod 0, working through the opening N in'the forward end of-the lever K, and which" open-,
ing communicates with slot- N. Lever K carries at its forward end a self-locking,"
double hook Q, 2'. e., a hook formed with two curved jaws, a long jaw and a shorter jaw g, said jaws being curved toward each other, all as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
S, S are depending arms or supportingstandards, preferably curved inward or bowed toward their lower ends, as at S, S, said curved portions terminating in downward-projecting, bifurcated-feet U, U, and in the slots '1, T formed by said bifurcations, the rim of a tub W may be seated. Setscrews w may be provided, to clamp the feet to said rim. The standards S, S carry,
.at their top an eye or ring R, engagedby the double hooks Q, thus forming a knuckle, joint. Both standards S, S and the rod 0 constitute supporting mechanism for the ,forward end of said lever K, with which supporting mechanism said lever is slidably gassociated or connected, as set forth. In the operation of the mechanism, will be noted that, when the lever K -iii its movefment passes its level and moves forward on "t lie rod 0, the position of the pounders A,D fis" changed upon the surface ofthe clothes, operated upon. The pounders may be raised or lowered, to accommodate a greater or {less amount of clothes, by simply changing ,the pin-M in the holes F, F in t-heupper Jend of the lever K. 5 Having thus fully described {what I claim as new and desire @Letters-Iatent is: In a clothes-pounding mechanism, clothes-l pounding -.1nombe1's, and mechanism for I my invention, to secure by changing the position thereof upon the sur- 'v pin working in said slot and limiting the range of movementof saigd rod, said rod carrying a double hook at "its forward end, and vertical supportmgrmechamsm PIVOlT- ally connected at its top with said double ehook.
