WATER-CLOSET SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911.
Application filed February 6, 1911. Serial No. 606,878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILLY RosENBERoER,
- a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, re-
' by the user, and also to preserve the seat in a clean condition.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrange ment, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved protector. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the seat portion of the protector. Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are fragmentary detail views, partly in section, showing the manner of fastening the protector to a closet seat. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamps for fastening the protector to the closet seat. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail view in elevation showing the front edge of seat portion, or pad, of the protector. Figs. 9 and 10 are fragmentary views in vertical section and plan showing the manner of loosening the top sheet of the pad.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 12 designates the usual or any preferred type of water closet seat, which has the hinge arms 13 of clamps 14 pivotally fastened to the under surface thereof. Said clamps 14 project above the sides of said seats and have inwardly projecting upper flanges 15 adapted to engage side grooves 16 formed in the base frame 17 or support of the improved protector. Said base frame is shaped to conform to the contour of the seat 12 and is provided with a central open ing that alines with the similar opening in said seat. The seat 12 has the usual hinge connection 18 with the stationary rear board 19 that is suitably fastened to the rear portion of the closet. As will be clear from the foregoing the frame 17 when held to the seat 12 by the clamps 14 is immovable relative to said seat, but by swinging said clamps to disengage the same from the grooves 16 the said framecan be moved independently of said seat.
A seat portion 18, which is composed of a plurality of sheets of paper or other suitable material is placed on the frame 17 and engages spurs 18 that project from the seat 12 through frame 17 so that the said frame and sheets are prevented from sliding or slipping relative to said seat. Said seat portion corresponds in shape with the frame 17 and is provided with the central opening 20 that alines with the similar openings formed through the frame and the seat. The sheets which compose the seat portion 18 are arranged in tablet or pad form and the edges thereof at opening 20 are suitably treated to render the same germ and liquid proof. At the rear the corners of the seat portions are notched or beveled as indicated at 21 to form clearance space for the fingers so that access can be had to the rear edges of said sheets to permit the sheets to be torn or removed from the pad. At the front edge of the pad 18* is beveled as indicated at 22 so that the upper sheets will overhang the lower sheets and thereby protect the same. In Fig. 8 dotted lines have been used to indicate the position the front edges of the tablet assumes after the protector has been used, and it will be observed by references to said figure that the pressure upon said front edge of the tablet curves the same downwardly which adds to the comfort of the user. The sheets are held in tablet form by the front clip-shape bands 23 and elongated clip-shaped bands 24 which engages the top and the bottom of said pads, said bands being preferably formed of strips of paper or other easily usually tear-able material that is coated with adhesive material. The pad is fastened to the frame 17 by the bands 25 which are formed of material similar to that described in connection with the bands 23 and 24.
To facilitate the breaking of the bands 23, 24 and 25 a string, wire or other flexible material 26 has one end fastened to a screw 27 carried by the rear of frame 17. Said string 26 extends beneath the top sheet of the pad as is indicated in Figs. 1, 9 and 10, and projects beyond one side of the pad and is provided with a hand grip 28 so that the said projected end can be readily grasped to draw the string 26 across the pad beneath the top sheet thereof to sever the bands 23, 24 and 25 as is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this means it will be seen that the top sheet can be readily removed from the pad when desirable.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this invention provides a strictly sanitary attachment for a water closet seat in which the sheets of the protector are so arranged that the user comes in contact with the top sheet only and said top sheet can be readily removed after having been used. It will also be seen that the use of the clamps li'normally, rigidly hold the protector in proper position on the closet seat but when necessary or desirable can be readily released from the protector to permit the protector to be raised independently of the seat.
, What I claim as my invention is 1. A water closet protector comprising clamps pivotally connected to a closet seat, and a protector for said seat including a base support provided with grooves adapted to be engaged by said clamps to look said protector to said seat.
2. A seat protector'for water closets comprising a base, a pad thereon composed of separable sheets, the edges of said sheets being treated to render them germ and liquid proof, the front edges of said sheet arranged in overhanging relation, said sheets having portions of their edges notched to facilitate grasping the edges of said sheets to permit one of said sheets to be removed from the pad, breakable means for fastening said pad to a water closet seat, and means interposed between two of said sheets for severing said breakable means.
3. A water closet seat protector comprising a plurality of super-imposed sheets arranged in pad form, a base support for said sheet, tearable bands engaging the edges of said sheets, tearable bands for fastening the sheets to said base,- and means fastened to said base and interposed between two of said sheets to sever said bands.
4. A seat protector for water closets comprising a supporting base provided with side grooves, a seat portion carried by said base, and clamps adapted to be pivotally connected to a closet seat and provided with inwardly-projecting flanged free ends for engaging said grooves to lock said support to said seat. 5. In a device of the character described the combination with a water closet seat provided with spurs, of a base support in said seat through which said spurs project, a pad carried by said base and engaged by said spurs, means carried by said seat for locking the base support thereto, said pad being formed of separable sheets, breakable means for holding said sheets to said support, and means interposed between two of said sheets for severing said breakable means.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Y WILLY ROSENBERGER.
