O. S. LEAVlTT. Drawing F rame For Hemp, Flax, and Other Fibrous Substances No. 10,034- Patented Sept. 20, 1853 UNITED STATES PAT NT @Fi lCE@ or s. LEAVITT, on MABOELLUS, NEW Yon- IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-FRAMES FOR'HEMP Ame FLAX,
Specification fiirming part of Letters Patent No. Ei flPZB i, dated Sepinmbcr 20, 1853.
To aZlyw/zom it may concern.-
Be it 'known'that I, OLIVER S. LEAVITT, of Marcellus, in the county of Onondaga and StateofNew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Drawing Hen1p,?FlaX,-and other F'brous Substances;
and l. doherebydeclare t at the following is.
a full and exactdescriptipn of the construetion and operatitfnlof thesanie, reference being hadto the annexed drawings, making av part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a grqnnd plan,'the same letters referring to like parts in both drawings.
The frame is represented by a a a a. v
b (I represent the holding-rollers, and e 0 the drawing-rollers, either of which may be made whin ing-fluted andin the usual manner, hav- Ping-snclii' gnides before the holdingollers and such, afieondensing "apparatus after the drawing-rollers as may be desired, not necessary here to"--represent, The set of gill-bars o is propelled in the directionof the arrows by two chains, which pass over thewheels f and g, having-cogs which workbetween the joints of the chain. j
iionfnected, with the gill bar's e at each end are-arms, as atreaching ,backto joints in lhechain, through which. pass pieces parallel to the gill-bars, by which the chains and bars:
are connected. The gilhpins attached to each barpenetrate the material, (hemp, flax, or other librons uQb't'S'iZZlHCG the slivers of which have been introduced by the holding-rollers!) (Z afterfithey pass round to the top of the wheel j resting upon the slide it, which is madeto extend lbrward toward the drawing-rollers c c as ifar as it is desired to have the pins remain in the material. vJust as the barhas passed the "end of'the guide t, (represented bythe' dotted line-at IO, Fig. 1,) a"piece,'w attached to .the -'piecem,.is brought down upon the gill-bar, or
upon one or bothjo'f its arms by the action of the crank q uponth'e shaft 1-, and immediately connected-with'the pitman 1). The bar, as at It, turns as'upon. a; hinge, the joint being at y". Onv the outside of the chain, at oneend of the bars, a pieceis' attached to each bar having a notch cut out of itsedge, as at z z z z, so that a point or dog is made to project, as at Near the wheel 9 is a piece, 3', firmly fast-h ened in such a manner that the point i must strike against it, theeffect of which is to do "press still more thc'bar, as at 7;, bringing it round, so as to be in the right position to move back underneath upon the guide 8 s, which keeps the bars in position until they pass around the wheel f andnntil the gill-pins connected with them enter the material. The action of the crank q as it rises moves the lover- I). with which it'isconnected at d, which works upon a fu'lcru-ni at c and depresses the two rods a and a", the eiie'ct of which is to make the pins" enter the material to be drawn effect;
.nally, being raised by the descending motion of the crank q in time to clear-the pins as they pass forward toward'the drawing-rollersc c.
Thes'haft 1', upon which the cranks-"are, must make as many more revolutions than the shaft upon which the wheel 5 is placed as there are cogs npon' 7, so as to depress each bar at the proper time, andalso to depress the rods 0, and. a once for each bar as it passes beneath them, which may contain one or more rows of pins, as may be desired. nectcd with the wheel-XV, placed on the shaft 0 with the wheels f, onwhich the chains rnn,
should be such as will correspond with the motion of said wheels f and g. If g has four cogs, as in this case, and the wheel'f twelve,
ithe wheel XVshonld be three times the diam- --'-ter of the wheel-W, which is'connected on the same shalhor on shafts oft-he same speed with the wheels 9. A pinion, is placed on the shaft of-the drawing-roller c, actingnpon the intermediate wheel \V'", which drives .\\/'upon the crank-shaft 9-, and also W npon'the shaft containing i "anew. The intermediate wheel \l/ connects fland \V, and the intermediate wheel \vflxrnnningon the stud .5, 'con nccts thejwheel \V- on the shaft with l pensing with the shaft, which runs through 1111- der the gill-bars'andinside the chains,- and the top rollers may be geared with the lower onesfor be made to run by their traction thereto, increased bysprings, weights, or 1evers, as may be desired Thegill bars may be The 'carin 0011-,
