To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. F. MAID- ivror, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing- Forms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to printing forms with the object in view of providing means for supporting the bases of the type blocks, whereby a clearer and more precise printing effect may be obtained.

Another object is to provide means for iirmly securing and adjusting the type blocks in the printing frame or chase.

A further object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the various parts whereby the above mentioned objects may be more efectively carried out.

A practical embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

The printing frame or chase is denoted by 17 and is providedwith a back plate 2 secured thereto by screws 3. The printing frame is shown in the present instance as rectangular in form and its members are held together by screws 1*. Two opposite side members of the frame are provided with undercut grooves 4, litted to receive the dovetail tongues 5 of the spacing bars 6, thus holding the said spacing bars inv sliding engagement with the frame 1. The spacing bars are provided at their top with lateral extensions 7 fitted to engage the recesses 8 in the type blocks 9, for holding the type blocks against removal from the frame with their bases against the back plate 2. One of the spacing bars, in the present instance the central one, denoted by 10, is ixed in position within the frame by means of screws 11 which prevent it from sliding in either direction as the other bars are permitted to do.

Adjusting screws 12 are pivotally mounted in the frame or chase 1, and in the fixed spacing' bar 10, as indicated at 13 and 14 respectively. In the present instance, four of these screws are shownJ two of them mounted in one end member of the frame and in the iixed spacing bar and the other two mounted in the opposite end member of the frame and in the fixed spacing bar. These adjusting screws have a screwsthreaded engagement with the adjustable spacing bars 6, whereby the rotation of the adjusting screws will slide the adjustable spacing bars toward or away from the iixed spacing bar 10. These adjusting screws are provided with enlarged portions 15 having holes 16 therein adapted to receive a spanner or other convenient instrument for rotating the adjusting screws.

In operation, the adjusting screws are rotated so as to separate the spacing bars from each other far enough to permit the insertion therebetween of the type blocks. The type blocks are arranged in t-he relative positions they are desired to occupy with respect to each other, and the adjusting screws are then rotated in the reverse direction, forcing the spacing bars toward each other and clamping the type blocks in position between the spacing bars, with the bases of the type blocks resting on the back plate.

It will be seen that a great variety both in number and size of type blocks may be used in connection with my apparatus, and that any desired relative arrangement of the type blocks may be obtained.

Furthermore, the fact that the chase or frame is provided with a back plate on which the bases of the type blocks rest, provides a very firm and unyielding printing form, with the result that the characters upon the type blocks are printed upon the desired material in a clearer and more precise condition than has heretofore been obtainable.

It is to be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the variousparts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the form herein shown and described, but j 4What I claim is:

l. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a black` plate, fixed and adjustA able spacing bars carried by the chase, and adjusting screws engaging the chase and the fixed bar for moving the adjustable Abars toward and away from the fixed bar.

2. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having a back plate, fixed and adjustable spacing bars carried by the chase, and adjusting screws pivoted in the chase and fixed bar and having a screw-threaded engagement with the adjustable bars for moving the adjustable bars toward and away from the fixed bar.

3. A printing form comprising a chase or frame havinga back plate, fixed and adjustable spacing bars carried by the chase and shaped for locking engagement with the type blocks, and adjusting screws engaging t-he chase and the fixed bar for moving the adjustable bars toward and away from the fixed bar, for locking and releasing the type blocks to and from the chase or frame with the bases of the blocks against the back plate.

4. A printing form comprising a chase or frame having aback plate, fixed and adjustable spacing bars carried by the chase and shaped for locking engagement with the type blocks, and adjusting screws pivoted in the chase and fixed bar and having a screwthreaded engagement with the adjustable bars for moving the adjustable bars toward and away fromthe fixed bar, for locking and releasing the type blocks to and from the chase or frame'with the bases of the blocks against the back plate.
