Description

4"licte'rs Patent No. 100,332, dated March l, 1 870.
IMPRovED EEVEESIELE HINGE.
The Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent 'and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT RSEYMOUR, of Hecia Works, in the county of On'eida,'and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ButHinges; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdcscription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use .the same, reference being had to the accomf panying drawings forming part of this specification.
Thisl invention relates to improvements in buthinges, and consists in an improved arrangement of the same, for adaptation for useeither as right or lefthanded hinges, and for self-locking to hold the door or s hutter open when working on either hand.
Also for unlocking, by pressing on the stile'o' the shutter to which the hinge is-connected.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a part of a window-blind and window-frame with my improved hinge attached.
Figure 2 is a top view of a pair of buts, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation when in the open position and looking in a direction perpendicular to'the view of fig. 1.
Siniilarletters/of 'reference indicate corresponding parts.
Each leaf or plate A or A of a pair` of buts,`is provided with a perpendicular ange, B'or'B. The righthand end of' the flange B extends beyond the plate A, and is provided on the upper side with a hollow conical pintle, C, and on the other end is a catch-shoulder, D, on the upper side of the lange, and 'a notch, E, at the lower side.
The edges ofthe plates are curved in front of these shoulders and notches from the bottom upward, so that the part on the door or blind rides up the incline of the part attached to the frame.
The other plate A' is provided on the lett end of its flange, which is similarly extended, with a corresponding hollow pintle, C', and on the right end with a similar catch-shoulder, D', and notch '.lhese pintles iit each other equally well whether one, or the` other is placed above, fthe hollow of the one answering as the socket for the other, so that if the blind or door is to' swing to the left, the left-hand plate will be placed below and the other on the top,"and for the blind or door to lswing to thevright, the right-hand plate is placed below and the other above.
It will be seen that the notch E orE' of the part of the .hinge which swings will always ride up the incline G or- G' of the stationary part, and engage the shoulder of the fixed part'i'or locking the door or window open.
The unlocking ot' the hinges nay be accomplished by lateral pressure or force applied to the stile opposite the pintles in any direction, the said force raising the inclined socket of' the parts of the hinges attached to the blind up'the inclined surfaces of the pintles of the other parts. I
Having thus described my invention,
' I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- 1 The construction of buthinges with thehollow conical pintles C O'on the rightandleft sides, respectively, of the pairs of plates, and fitted for operation together for light4 and left action, and for closing the `blinds or doors by pressure in any direction thereon, substantially as speciiiedr 2. The arrangement on each plate of the two notches E E' and two shoulders D D', substantially as speciiicd.
The above speciiication ot' in y invention signed by me this 11th day of: October, 1869.
ALBERT P'. SEYMOUR. Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, ALEX. F.RoBERTs.
