Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUNCAN R. FRANK- LIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Can- Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for separating two part receptacles which usually consist of a main or holding part, and a lid or closing part.
The object of this invention is to provide an opening device that will easily separate the lid or cover from the main part or receptacle.
It consists of the novel devices herein shown and described.
In the preferred form of my invention shown herein the lid or cover is provided with a lip or flange Or suitable projection, the lip or flange fitting down over the main part of the receptacle; there is a groove or projection in the exterior of the receptacle properly shaped to receive a surrounding wire or band; the terminals of this wire or band are brought close together and turned outwardly at an angle diverging from the receptacle. There is an angular lever pro vided with a suitable perforation through which these terminals pass so that the lever rests on these terminals as a fulcrum; one arm of the lever is in position to engage the flange of the lid, the other arm of the lever forms a handle and actuator by applying pressure to which the lid is easily lifted; the diverging terminals hold the lever in place and the lever in turn holds the clamp in position, and when pressure is applied to the handle part of the lever, the lever has a tendency to slide down toward the boX at the same time lifting the cover.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention in its most approved form.
Figure 1 is a complete side elevation; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, both views showing the lever in the act of lifting the lid; Fig. 3 is a top planview; Fig. 4 is a view of the clamp; Fig. 5 is a view of the lever; Fig. 6 is a side .view of the lever; Fig. 7 is a top view of the lever.
Referring now to the specific form of my invention shown, 9 is the main receptacle. It has an encircling groove 9 with projections eachside of it. The lid 0 has a lip f uihich fits over and surrounds the receptac e r.
c is a clamp preferably of wire or it may be in the form of a band of metal fitting the groove 9 and surrounding the receptacle r. Clamp c has diverging terminals 6, that is they diverge from the receptacle outwardly. They are preferably in the same plane.
at is the angular lever, a is its operating handle or actuator, the arm 6 is designed to engage a flange f of the lid 6, and d is a third arm.
2) is a perforation which is provided with the recessed portions 19 and 20. The terminal arms t are arranged to pass through these recessed portions or apertures 19 and 20 and to be thereby forced together thus constricting the clamp c. This contracts the circular clamp 0 so that it is held firmly in the groove 9. The lever m is thus fulcrumed on the terminals t as shown in Fig. 8; the arm Z2 being in position to engage the flange of the lid or any suitable projection on the lid which may be provided. The arm 64 also performs the function of a handle by whichthe box may be supported to prevent the manipulator soiling his hands from the contents of the receptacle. The perforation 72 is of such dimensions that when in position on the terminals L, the clamp c is held in its groove 9 and the diverging of the terminals t prevents the lever m from sliding off thereof.
The angular lever m is preferably stamped out of sheet metal, the arm I) being the metal taken from the elongated part of the perforation 79 and the arm d forming a base or strengthening support for the arm 7).
In operation the lever is placed in position with the end of arm 6 in engagement with the flange of lid 6 and pressure is applied to the actuator or arm a. This tends to elevate the arm 6 carrying upward the lid 6 so that it may be easily removed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, Thus the lid or cover 6 is forced or pried off of the body of the receptacle. hen the arm a is pressed down, the diverging terminal arms i tend to force the whole lever m toward the receptacle thus always maintaining the end of arm 6 beneath the lip 7. When not in use the lever we may be left with the arms 5 and d substantially parallel with the walls of the receptacle and its cover 6, and with the arm a fiat against terminal arms Z. By pulling or removing the lever m from termi nal arms 6 of the clamp 0, both the lever and the clamp may be easily removed from the receptacle.
It occasionally happens that in prying off the cover 6 the metal of the flange of the cover will tear away without moving the cover. I In such a case with my improved device, the clamp and lever may be quickly removed and the lever adjusted and placed at another portion of the receptacle where it may take a fresh hold of the cover at a place where the cover has not been injured. It will therefore be apparent that it is of eX- treme importance that the clamp 0 and lever 'm be removable, not only to simplify the construction and assembling of the device but also so that if the lever fails to work in one position it may be adjusted to another.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a two part receptacle, of a removable clamp surrounding one part thereof, a two armed lever fulcrumed on said clamp one of said arms be ing in position to engage the second part of said receptacle to pry the same away, the second of said arms forming the actuator and said lever being provided with means for constricting said clamp upon its support.
2. The combination with a two part receptacle of the character described, of an opening device consisting of a suitable clamp for said clamp, a two armed lever having its fulcrum on said clamp terminals, one arm of said lever engaging the second part of said receptacle and the other arm projecting and lever forming a handle for the receptacle.
3. The combination of a two part receptacle, a suitable clamp surrounding one ceptacle and cover therefor, a suitable clamp extending about said receptacle, and a lever for constricting said clamp supported on said clamp in position to pry off the cover.
5. The combination of a sheet metal receptacle and lid therefor having a lip or flange adapted" to inclose the edge of said receptacle, a removable clamp approximately 1 surrounding the receptacle having free terminals extending outwardly at an angle to one another, an angular lever perforated to lid having a lip or flange adapted to inclose the free edge of said receptacle, an opening device consisting of a wire clamp nearly encircling the receptacle, a groove in the outer surface of the receptacle to receive said clamp, projecting terminals on said clamp, an angular lever having a perforation through which said terminals pass to form a fulcrum for said lever, one arm of said lever being in position to engage the lid, the other arm of said lever forming a handle and actuator to constrict the clamp and lift the lid.
7 The combination with a receptacle and a lid having a lip or flange adapted to inclose the free edge of said receptacle of a wire clamp substantially surrounding said receptacle, diverging terminals vfor said clamp, a perforated angular lever located upon said terminals, said lever having two arms one arm of said lever engaging said Q tuator to lift the lid and constrict the clamp and said lever and terminals forming a handle for the receptacle.
8. The combination with a two part receptacle of the character described, of an opening device therefor consisting of a wire jclamp surrounding one of said parts and having diverging terminals and a twofarmed lever having a suitable perforation through which said clamp terminals pass and arranged to pry off one of the parts of isaid receptacle.

The combination of a two part receptacle, a removable supporting member extending part way around one part of the same, integral projections extending from said member, and a lever comprising tWo integral arms, having its fulcrum on said projections, one arm of said lever engaging the second part of said receptacle, and the other arm projecting to form the actuating means to pry away said second part.
13. The combination of a two part receptacle, a removable supporting member extending part Way around one part of the same, integral projections extending from said member, and a lever comprising two integral arms, having its fulcrum on said projections, one arm of said lever engaging the second part of said receptacle, and the other arm projecting to form the actuating means to pry away said second part, and said lever being arranged to constrict said supporting member to more firmly hold the same on the receptacle.
