DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING GRAVE-LININGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Application filed August 16, 1910. Serial No. 577,510.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH H. DEERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleburne, in the county of J ohnson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting Grave-Linings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for supporting grave lining. Its object is to provide a device for supporting the fabric used to line a grave which device may be quickly and securely attached to the fabric, and positioned adjacent to the grave without the necessity of any special temporary construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for supporting the lining of graves which device will have the form of a collapsible frame adapted to be readily transported to and from the places where it will be used.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong durable, simple and eflicient, and comparatively easy to construct, and also one which will not be likely to get out of working order.
With these and various other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a grave showing the herein described device positioned adjacent to the edges thereof, and furnishing a support for the grave lining. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 09-00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a erspective detail view showing one of the astening devices employed to attach the grave lining to the herein described collapsible frame.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like letters of reference designate similar parts in all the figures, the letter A denotes a grave, lined with a suitable fabric B for which fabric the herein described invention furnishes a means of support. Upon the ground adjacent to the edges of the grave is positioned a collapsible frame composed of a number of pivotally connected links C. This frame when in place is rectangular in form being composed of sides and ends similarly constructed, and since the side and end members are collapsible, the frame may be adapted to a grave of any ordinary size. The links C are arranged in pairs, the extremities of the pairs being pivotally connected and the members of each pair being centrally pivoted one upon the other. In order that the side and end members may form square corners when the collapsible frame is extended as shown in the drawing, links G are provided which establish a pivotal connection between the extremities of the outermost links O of the end members and the outermost pivotal points of the side members.
Upon the inner side of the rectangular frame just described, are pivoted a number of hinge members D, to each of which is attached a second hinge member E. At each' side of the hinged connection between the parts D and E a hook F extends from the first named part. When the frame is properly positioned adjacent to a grave, the parts D and E will overhang the edges thereof. In order to secure the grave lining B to these parts, the hinge member E will be raised and the edge of the cloth will be caught upon the hooks F. The parts D will then be swung downward as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, clamping the fabric securely upon the hooks.
The side and end members of the above described frame may be so connected to each other as to be readily detached in order to be more easily transported.
The materialemployed for the frame will preferably be some ornamental form of metal although it is obvious that various classes of material may be made to serve the purpose.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a rectangular frame, consisting of collapsible side and end members, of a plurality of hinged members pivoted upon the side and end members of the aforesaid frame, hooks projecting from said hinge members at each side of the hinge portion thereof, a hinge member attached to each of the aforesaid hinge members and links pivotally connecting the end members and the side members as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of links, having their extremities pivotally connected and arranged in pairs, the members of which are centrally pivoted, one upon the other, of
hinge members pivoted at the point of connection of one member of each pair of links With a member of the adjacent pair, the said hinge members being provided with hooks at each side of their hinged portions, a hinge member attached to each of the aforesaid hinge members and links pivota-lly connecting the extremities of the outermost links of the end members and the outermost pivotal joints of the side members, as and for the 10 purposes set forth.
In testimony'whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v URIAH H. DEERING.
