WILLIAM BARTHOLOMEVI, QF CHICAGD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO TROY LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, LIMITED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SAFETY EXTRACTOR-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BARTHoLo- I\IE\V, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Safety Extractor-Covcrs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a safety extractor cover and particularly to a construction which prevents the opening of the cover members when the driving connection is in operative position.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction in which the opposite members of the cover engage each other at their free ends when closed and are retained in closed position so long as the driving connections are shifted to operate the extractor or other device to which the invention may be applied.
Uther and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective showing the application of the cover to a centrifugal extractor the cover being of such configuration as to conform to the outline of the case; Fig. 2 is an elevation with parts in section showing the cover members; Fig. 3 is a plan of these parts showing a modified outline of cover; Fig. 1 is a detail plan of the pivoting bracket for the cover members; Fig. 5 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 6 is a detail section on line 66 of Fig. 3 showing the means for limiting the opening of the cover members; and Fig. 7 is a detail of the cover pivot bearing.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
This invention is adapted for application to any character of power driven machine having cover members, but for the purpose of illustration, is shown in connection with a centrifugal extractor, which embodies the casing 10 provided with the standards 11 at opposite sides, which form a bearing for the driving shaft 12. This shaft is driven by means of a belt 13 which embraces a pulley thereon and extends over an idler 14 and thence downward to a pulley 15 mount-- ed upon a shaft 16. This shaft is also pro vided with fast and loose pulleys 17 and 18 and with a cooperating belt shifter 19 mounted upon a sliding rod 20 which is provided at the front of the machine with an operating handle 21.
The casing 10 is provided with an openlng at its upper portion through which access may be obtained to the basket or other member of the extractor mounted therein and this opening is adapted to be closed by means of cover members 22 and 23, each of which is mounted upon a hinge bracket 24 which is secured to the standard or other fixed part by means of the apertures 25 and provided with an aperture 26 adapted to receive a pin 27 carried by the bearing 35 in which the pivot 28 is mounted and upon which the cover members are hinged by any desired means, for instance a pin 36 as shown in Fig. 2. Each of these cover members is provided with a sleeve 29 mounted upon the pivot 28 and the movement thereof in each direction is limited by a stop 30 carried by the pivot 28 and trav-' ersing a slot 31 provided in the sleeve 29 of the cover members, as shown in Fig. 6.
The cover members 22 and 23 are provided with an engaging projection such as the pins 32 carried by the member 23 and adapted to seat within a recess 33 carried by the member 22 as shown in Fig. 2. The cover member 23 is also provided with a lug or projection 34 upon its upper face which is disposed parallel to the path of travel of the handle 21 of the shifting rod 20 so that when said rod is shifted to apply the power for operating the machine, an opening movement of the cover member 23 cannotbe effected.
In the operation of the invention, when the cover members are closed and the shifting rod drawn out-ward to apply the power to the machine, the opening of said members is prevented because of their interlocked connection and the interposition of the shifting rod in the path of travel of one of the cover members, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. When it is desired to open the cover members, this shifting rod must be moved inward to transfer the driving belt to the loose pulley which disposes the handle of the shifting rod to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 3 which permit the swinging outward of the left member of the cover and the subsequent opening ofthe right member which is not engaged by this shift ing rod.
It will be seen that the invention presents a simple efficient and economical construction by which the cover members are positively retained in closed position when power is applied to the machine and when the power shifting means is operated to cut off the power, the cover members thereof may be readily opened.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In a safety cover, a movable cover member, and a power controlling device adapted for movement into the path of travel of said cover member when in driving position to prevent upward movement of. said cover.
2. In a safety cover, a movable cover member, a sliding power controlling device said cover members to adapted for movement above and in the path of. travel-of said covermember, and a lug carried by said member to engage said device.
3. In a safety cover, opposite cover members adapted to engage each other, and a power controlling device constructed for movement into the path of. travel of one of prevent upward movement thereof.
4. In asafety cover, opposite cover members having an interlocking connection, and a reciprocating shifter bar mounted for movement into and out of the path of travel of one of said cover members.
5. In a safety cover, opposite cover members adapted to engage each other,a reciprocatingshifter bar mounted for movement into and 'outof the path 'of travel ofione of said cover members, and a projection from the upper face of one cover member disposed parallel to the path of travel of saidshifting device.
' 6. In a safety hinged cover, opposite cover members having an interlocking connection, and a reciprocating power controlling device adaptedfor movement over one cover member intermediate of its hinge and its pointof connection with the opposite member.
7. In a safety hinged cover, opposite cover members mounted and adapted to en gage each other a projection carried'byone of said cover members, and a reciprocating power controlling device having a handle movable over one of said cover members and adapt'edto be engaged by said projection to prevent the upward movement of saidcover.
8. In a safety hinged cover, opposite other cover at their point of engagement.
9. In a safety cover, a cover member provided witha bearing sleeve having a circumferential slot therein, a pin disposed within said sleeve, and a stud carried by said pin and located within said slot to limit the travel of said cover member.
within said sleeve, a stud carried by said pin and located within said slot to limit the travel of said cover member, a sleeve carried by said post at an angle thereto, and a fixed bearing adapted to receive said sleeve.
11. In a safety cover, opposite hinged cover members having an interlocking connection at their free ends, and a shifter bar provided with'a belt guide and adapted to travel above and in the path of movement of one of said cover members.
12. In a safety cover, opposite hinged cover members having an interlocking connection at their free ends, a shifter bar provided with a belt guide and adapted to travel above and in the path of movement of one of said cover members, and means for limiting the swinging movement of said cover members.
13. In a safety cover, opposite hinged cover members having an interlocking con nection at their free ends, a shifter bar provided with a belt guide and adapted to travel aboveandin the path of movement of one of said cover members, means for limiting the swinging movement of said cover members, and a projection carried by said last mentioned cover member parallel to the path of travel of saidtshif-ter bar.
- 14. In a safety cover, opposite hinged cover members having an interlocking connection attheir free ends, a shifter bar provided with a belt guide and adapted to travel above andin the path of movement of one of said cover members, means for limiting the swinging movement of said cover members, and means for permitting a pivotalmovement of said cover members in a horizontal plane when opened.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
