ALVAI-I F. LENT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. PAULUS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CAP-EXPLODING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVAH F. LENT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Cap-Exploding Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for exploding paper percussion caps and the like, and comprises means whereby the explosion of a cap or the like will impart motion to a rubber ball or like projectile.
The device may, conveniently and desirably, have the general form of a firearm, for example, a pistol.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device of the character referred to, which is easily operated, which will impel through a considerable distance, a rubber ball or the like, by the mere explosion of an ordinary paper cap, and which is easily operated and may be operated without injury to the user.
I will now proceed to described my invention 'with reference to the accompanying drawings and will then point out the novel features in claim.
In said drawings: Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of the device; Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section thereof on the center line; Fig. 3 shows a top view of the device.
The device as shown in the drawings comprises complementary frame members 1 and 2, adapted to be secured together by rivets or the like 3, and together forming a hollow frame having the general form and appearance of a well known type of firearm; the particular device shown having the general form and appearance of a pistol. The said frame is provided at the end of its barrel with a bell mouth 4 to receive a rubber ball 5 or similar projectile, and just in rear of this bell mouth there is a pocket 6 to receive a paper cap or the like. lVithin the barrel portion 7 of the frame a sliding plunger 8 is mounted and in rear of said plunger is mounted an actuating spring 9 therefor. The said plunger is provided with a downwardly projecting finger piece 10, by which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 612,587.
said plunger may be pressed rearwardly against the action of its spring, and is also provided with a projection 11 adapted to be engaged by a similar projection 12 on a pivoted spring actuated trigger 13; the construction being such that when the plunger 8 is pressed back the projection 11 is engaged by the corresponding projection 12 of said trigger, whereby the plunger is held rearwardly against the action of its spring until the trigger is pulled; whereupon the plunger will be impelled forward by its spring until it encounters a paper cap in the said cap pocket, if there be one there, so exploding said cap. The gases produced by the explosion of the cap pass through the orifice 14 into the bell mouth, expelling a ball or the like which may be in that mouth.
The construction of the device is such that the hand of the operator is at a considerable distance from the cap when the latter explodes, so that there is for that reason very little liability of particles of the cap, or of the explosive composition thereof, flying back and burning the hand of the operator; also the construction of the parts is such that the fragments of the cap, and of the ash from the explosive charge, tend to fly upward rather than backward, the plunger 8 serving effectually as a shield to prevent these particles from flying backward.
What I claim is A device such as described, comprising a hollow frame comprising a barrel-shaped portion and a stock-shaped portion formed to simulate corresponding portions of a firearm, a longitudinal slot being provided in the lower portion of the barrel, said barrel having near its end a pocket to receive a paper cap or other explosive and having beyond such pocket and communicating therewith a mouth portion adapted to receive a projectile, a plunger mounted to slide in said barrel toward and from said cap pocket, and provided with a downwardly extending finger piece and with a downwardly extending projection adapted to be engaged by a trigger, both said finger piece and projection arranged to travel in said slot of the barrel, a spring in said barrel tending to impel said plunger forward, and
a trigger pivotally mounted in said frame specification in the presence of two subscriband having a projection adapted to engage ing Witnesses.
the above mentioned projection of said plunger, said trigger shaped for actuation by the finger of the user, and a spring for WVit-nesses:
said trigger. H. M. MARBLE,
In testimony whereof I have signed this PAUL H. FRANK.
ALVAH F. LENT.
