OLOF NELSON, OF SAN DIEGO,
CALIFORNIA.
PAIDDLE APPLIANCE FOR WAVE-MOTORS.
Application filed May 9, 1910, Serial No. 560,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF NELsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paddle Appliances for ave-Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a paddle appliance for wave motors, and has for its object, the provision of apparatus that will utilize both the vertical and horizontal movement of the water for the generation of power. It is more particularly a paddle in which a hollow buoyant member having a cylindrical impact surface, is mounted to move vertically within horizontally oscillating members or levers.
Another object is to provide a paddle of cylindrical form for the purpose of reducing liability to breakage or destruction, from the twisting effect of the waves.
To attain these objects the device consists in details of construction and combination of parts, as are hereinafter illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals, Figure 1 is a per spective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the movable block mounted between guides of the oscillating member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 designates the drum, havin a sliding block 2, mounted on each end, and moving vertically between guides 3, of the swinging support 4. Bar 5, is secured to sliding block 2, and reciprocates vertically within oscillating member 4.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
Renewed June 29, 1911. Serial No. 636,228.
In the operation of this device, the horizontal oscillating movement of the paddle may be transmitted and converted to a r0- tary motion, by means of a bar and crankshaft. The vertical reciprocating movement of the paddle may be transmitted and converted to a rotary motion, by means of -a walking beam and pivotally connected bars and crank-shafts. Thus both the vertical and horizontal movement of the seas, waves and tides, may be utilized for the generation of power.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise con struction as set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A paddle appliance for wave motors comprising a hollow buoyant member, sliding blocks operating between guides, horizontally oscillating members supporting the buoyant member, and bars adaptedto reciprocate vertically within the oscillating members.
2. A paddle appliance for wave motors, comprising a cylindrical drum, horizontally oscillating members supporting the drum, and vertically reciprocating bars attached to blocks on the ends of the drum, and moving with the drum.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
OLOF NELSON.
Witnesses F. M. KEENEY, J. 'W. MAs'rnR.
