Description

H. C. DE WITT.
VAPOR BURNER.
No. 100,270. Patented Mar. 1, 1870 @anni dtiljiiw.
HENRY C. DE WITT, O'F WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 100,270, dated March 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAPOR BURNERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same '1, HENRY C. DE Wrr'r, of Waukegan, in the county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Carbon Gas-Generators and Burners, of ,which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists iu the construction and arrangement of a carbon gas-generato;v o1 burner, so that thesame may be consolidated in one piece of metal, containing therein the tubes, air-inlet, reservoir, stop-cock, 85e., as is hereafter fully described and set forth. A
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing the tuheleading to the gas-chamber and the tube leadingfrom the gas-chamber to the discharging-jet. y
Figure 2 is a. cross-section showing the oxygenchalnber and the tubes'leading to and Ifrom the oxygen-chamber.
Figure 3 is a view through the burning orifice of fi Y. 2;
g:Figure 4 is a plan; and
Figure 5 is a. view of the thumb-screw.
' k is atube terminating at the top in the cup-shaped funnel-screw Z.
o is the b nrner,`the lower end of which screws into the cup-nut 1,. from the lower end of which extends up the burner the tube e into the gas-chamber a..
The gaschamber a can be located on both sides of the tip or burning orifice.
g is the tube leading from the gas-chamber to the end o f the nut or screw d. l
The nutdis made hollow, as shown'in figs. 2 and 5 c is a. gas-jet in the nut or screw d, and extends into the hollow of the screw,
h is the mixing-chamber.
The operation of :my invention is as follows:
The fluid designedto beused is placed in a receptacle higher than the burner, andis connected with the burner by the tube k. The oil passes upthrough the tube le, thence up through the tube c and into the gas-chamber a.
A small amount of oilat first passes down the small tube g out of the jet c and into the cup l.
A lighted match is applied to the oil in the cup, which soon heats the burner. The chamber a becomes heated and the oil therein is converted into gas. It is then pressed down through the tube g and out oi' the jet c.
The jet c is located in the oxygen-chamber b.
This chamber connects with the mixing-chamber h direct-ly at the top of the oxygen-chamber.
The gas from the jet c passes up through this connection into the mixing-chamber, and as the gas passes into the mixing-chamber, oxygen from the air mingles B'ith it sufficiently to make a peifect and incandescent ame.
The tubes and gas-chamberin the burner above the jet c vare kept constantly heated, hence a constant supply of' gas is a'orded for combustion.
\VhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
1. The construction and arrangement of a metallic gas-generator and burner, when the same has combined within it the air-inlet chamber b, mixing-chamber h, reservoir a, tubes c and g, and thumb or setsrcrew d, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
2; lThe combination and arrangement ofthe thumb or set-screw cl (containing within it the jet c) with the air-inlet-chamber b and tube g, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
H. C. DE WITT.
