EMORY J. CARTER, 0F FREMONT, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SIMPLE ACCOUNT SALES- BOOK COMPANY, OF FREMONT, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CABINET FOR LOOSE-LEAF AGOOUNT-SLIPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMORY J. CARTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Loose-Leaf Account-Slips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to holders for looseleaf accounts, such as are kept on sales-slips. Tn holders for accounts kept in this fashion, it has heretofore been diflicult to arrange and hold the accounts in compact form and so that the different customers accounts could be instantly found and be readily accessible and easily separated from the other accounts.
The object of my invention is to overcome the difficulties here indicated, and more particularly, to provide a cabinet 0r account-holder which shall have a convenient number of compartments arranged in steplike form and adapted to be suitably indexed, named or numbered, so that all of the names or characters of the index shall be in plain View, and to provide such holder with a lid and a drawer which, when they are closed, may be quickly and securely fastened and locked by the same fastening.
A further object of my invention is to so construct my holder that it shall, in a measure, be fireproof.
T attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,"
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my cabinet with the lid or cover in closed position, the drawer closed and the device ready for the reception of a suitable padlock; Fig. 2, an end-view of the cover seen from the inside; Fig. 3, a front-view of my device with the cover removed; Fig. 4:, a central vertical sectional side-elevation of the same seen on line w-0a, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of one of the slipholders hereinafter referred to, detached.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 9, 1909.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911. Serial No. 532,174..
Like parts are represented by corresponding numerals throughout the drawings.
In the drawings is represented a box of which 1 is the base or bottom, 2 the sides, 3 the rear and 4 the front. The top of the box slopes upwardly from the front to the back. A floor 5 between the top and the bottom slopes upwardly from the front to the back on a line parallel with the top. Beneath the floor is a drawer-space for a drawer 6 having a loop-handle 7.
The space above floor 5 is provided with a removable tray 8, the bottom of which is inclined at an angle to conform to the slope of the floor 5, the top of the tray being correspondingly inclined. The front, back, and sides of the tray are vertical, the upper margin of the tray being flush with or slightly lower than the upper margin of the cabinet. The tray 8 is of such dimensions as to fit loosely within the compartment of the cabinet above the floor 5. The chamber of the tray 8 has an inclined partition 8 midway between and parallel with its two sides, which partition divides the tray into two principal compartments. These compartment-s are, in turn, divided into two rows of small compartments 9 by means of transverse partitions 10, having their lower margins secured to the fioor of the tray, the partitions 10 being arranged parallel with the' front and back, so that the compartments 9 are arranged in steplike fashion from front to back.
I provide for my box a cover consisting of a top 11, sides 12, a back 13 and a front 14. This cover is inclined upwardly from front to back to correspond with the angle of the top of the box and fits closely over the top of the box. The cover when in place extends downwardly in front to just above the edge of the drawer 6. At each vertical corner, the cover is reinforced and strengthened, as is the box itself, by angle-bars 5 which embrace, as shown, the corners of the meeting members of the lid and the box. The inside of the box above the floor 5 is lined with fire-proof material, preferably sheets of asbestos, as at 15. The cover is in like manner lined at its top, front, back, and ends, as at 16, so that when the cover is in place, the upper chamber of the box is entirely surrounded and inclosed by asbestos sheets.
Rigidly secured to the front of the cover is a stout metal bar 17, the lower end of which projects downwardly into the handle 7. Through the upper end of the bar 17, and through the front of the cover is a slot 18, which, when the cover is in place receives a staple 19 securely connected to the front of the box. A padlock being properly locked in engagement with the staple, it will be seen that the cover is secured in place and that the drawer cannot be opened until the cover is removed.
In each of the compartments 9 is a slipholder 20 composd of light sheet metal having flanged side margins, as at 21, and abottom upwardly-turned flange 22 to hold the slips against accidental escape. The holder is provided with a spring 23 which presses the slips compactly together, but which permits their ready removal. The back of the holder near its top and near its opposite sides has slots 24:24: to receive the ends of index-cards which, when the slip-holders are in place, project above the upper margins of the partitions 10, so that the indexed cards are all in plain view, stepped one above another.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isr In a device of the described character, a box having its top inclined upwardly from front to back, a floor-partition parallel with the top, there being a drawer-space beneath the partition, compartments above the partition disposed parallel with the front and back and arranged in step-like relation, a cover for the box inclined from front to back to conform to the top of the box, a drawer in the. drawer-space, and means upon the cover for engaging and holding the drawer in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature in presence of two witnesses.
EMORY J. CARTER.
