TAILORING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADA WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enid, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailoring Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to measuring devices for use in tailoring, and the principal object of the same is to provide a measuring device of the character stated by means of which accurate measurement of the shoulder can be readily obtained.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, practical embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a preferred form of the improved measure. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View, partly in elevation and partly in section of the adjustable connection between the body of the measure and a standard carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the free end of said standard showing a shoulder engaging spring, thereon. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 44:, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar View taken on the line 66, Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 6 thereof, it will be seen that the improved measuring device comprises an elongated flat body 1 that is provided with a central longitudinal slot 2. Graduations designating inches and fractions thereof are arranged on said body at one longitudinal edge of the slot 2. The body 1 is preferably formed of sheet metal and has an enlarged end portion that is rolled to provide a sleeve 3 that proj ects at right angles to said body. Said sleeve is provided with a guide slot 4. A hollow bar 5 is slidably mounted in sleeve 3 and has an end extension forming an arm 6 that overhangs the inner longitudinal edge of body 1 in parallel relation. The arm 6 is provided with a plurality of holding notches 7. A sleeve 8 is slidable on said arm 6 and has a cut-away portion 9. Pivot ears 10 are carried by said sleeve and have a latch 11 mounted therein the end lip 12 of which projects through the cut-away portion 9 and engages the notches 7 to lock the sleeve to said arm. A spring 13 normally holds the latch 11 in engagement with the notches 7 Sleeve 8 is provided with a pendent lug 14: to which a bowed shoulder-engaging spring 15 is detachably fastened by the screw 16, or other type of fastener.
A hand grip 17 has its shank 18 extended through slot 1 and fastened to the bar 5. Said grip 17 is used to adjust bar 5 longitudinally of the sleeve 3. The inner end of bar 5 is equipped with an internal seat 19 upon which one end of a rod 20 rests. The upper end of said rod is equipped with a hook 21 to which one end of an elastic band 22 or other type of spring is fastened, the other end of said band being fastened to a hook 23 carried by a cap 24 that closes the lower end of sleeve 3. viously opposes an outward movement of The band 22 obbar 5 relative to sleeve 3, and automatically returns the said bar to its initial position when the manual pressure is removed from the hand grip 17.
A plate 25 has a threaded shank 26 extended through slot 2 of body 1. Said shank is engaged by a knob 27 to adjustably clamp plate 25 to the body 1. A tape measure 28 has an end fitted over shank 26 and is clamped to body 1 by the plate 25. The inner edge of the body 1 merges into the sleeve 3 on an easy curve, as indicated at 29, so that said portion can be snugly fitted beneath an arm when a shoulder measurement is being obtained.
It will be seen that the bar 5 being longitudinally adjustable in sleeve 3, and the shoulder-engaging spring 15 being adjustably connected to the arm 6 by means of the sleeve 8, the necessary vertical and horizontal adjustments can be readily obtained to assure that the device is properly fitted over the shoulders, and the tape 28 being adjustably connected to the body 1, accurate measurements can be readily made by the same.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A measuring device comprising a body provided with a central longitudinal slot, a right-angularly projecting sleeve at one end of said body, a bar slidable in said sleeve and provided with an arm that overhangs said body in parallel relation,
, said sleeve provided with a longitudinal shoulder-engaging means adjustable on said sleeve at one end, shoulder-engaging means adjustable in said sleeve, and measuring means adjustably connected to said body.
3. A measuring device comprising a body,
a right angular sleeve at one end thereof,
slot, a bar longitudinally movable in said sleeve,'a hand grip carried, by said bar and projecting through said slot, elastic means connecting said bar to said sleeve and opposing relative longitudinal movement thereof in one direction, said bar provided with an arm that is parallel with said body, a sleeve longitudinally, adjustable on, said arm,
shoulder engaging means carried by said sleeve, means for locking said sleeveto said arm, and measuring means adjustably connected to said body.
LA device of the character described comprising a body formed of sheet metal, said body having one end rolled to provide a sleeve that projects at right-angles thereto, measuring means carried by said body, and shoulder engaging means carried by said sleeve. 7
5. A device of the character described comprising a body, a bar adjustably connected to one end thereof, said bar provided with an arm that is parallel with said body, said arm provided with holding notches, a sleeve adj ustable on said arm, a latch carried by said sleeve for engaging said notches, shoulder-engaging means carried by said sleeve, and measuring means carried by said body.
6. A measuring device comprising a body,
a bar adj ustably connected to one end thereof, said bar provided with an arm that is parallel with saidbody, a sleeve adjustable on said arm, means for locking said sleeve to said arm, a bowed shoulder-engaging spring suspended from said sleeve, and measuring means carried by said body.
7. A measuringdevice comprising a body provided with a longitudinal slot, said slot having one longitudinal edge provided with marking designating inches and fractions thereof, a plate having a threaded shank extending through said slot, a knob engaging said shank to adjustably clamp said .plate to the body, a measuring tape having one end connected to said shank, and
shoulder-engaging means adjustably carried by said body and supported in spaced parallel relation to said slot.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
