JAMES GAYLEY, OF NEW YORK, 1\TY.
`A:ESPARATUS DRYING AIR vIBY- REFBIGERATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-eil Sepia. 5, ittii.
Appicetion led January-14,1909. Serial No. 472..7'7.v
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it linowntlzizit I, .Liiins Gr'iiYLnY, of New Y rk, in th'e county of New York and tritate of New York, have invented a. new
,. :ind iiseiil Apparatus for Drying Air by lieiprigeration, oit which the ,tollowing` is liill, clear, :ind exact description, rei'erence 'being had to the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 6 is e. general VView .showing the spray devices.
.Lily invention relates to the drying of air by refrigeration it accordance with the well known system of nii' prior patents', and. is designed. to eeonoinize in the oost of operetion by forcing the iiir into closer Contact with the cooling pipes, and :it the sanne time insure the flowing; of 'the thawing iii-.iter over the cooling pipes in removing the eongeeled inoisiure tnerefroni. in this systeni of ilrying sir, one of the iiiiiiciilties enconnterecl is the uneven distribution of the n n" flowing np til'iroiigh the chfin'ibers, as it tends to liow' to the w' lls oi the chiin'il'ier or ohiiinbei's, fir into.
these bullies or ileliectoi's forcing the more intiinirte Contact with the pipes and also iiirecting the tl'iziwii'ilgy water into contact with these pipes.
.in the ilifii'wing .l show :i ret'ricjeriiliiip;A
buil "ng 2,*liiiiiigg :i sei-ies ot' re rigei'iitiiig chambers 3. l he hriiie or retrigeriitiiig` agent for pooling the :iii posses through pipe coils 4, ui'iiingetl in the ehiiinber. ln l* ig. l,
.l show the eliiiinbers :is iliviiloil by brick orconcrete walls 5, which walls :ire provided with baille plates 6, which projecttowirii the coils and arepreferably of steel ,or other metal. These may be located :it any ile table distances apart sind may project to any desired iiniount. l'n Fig. ll I shown double plate wiill i', which is i'illeil in with nonconductingl material and with angle iron ballie plates S, riveted or otherwise see-tired thereto. .In Fig. 5 show ii of brick or concrete well S), provided with integral built in del'leetors l0. In all the forms, the baille plates, defleetors, or (listribiiters are" vent the rising air from `ceheiinelingf up along the walls and force this air ini-.o inti :mate Contact with the cooling pipes. Moreover, in the spraying ol' the pipes by spraying the nozzles .of the upper port of thil chambers, ine writer or thawing liquid iis descends through the chen'ibers will be lipipes, thus reducing the ernennt of water and Consequently the heet-ing of the chainber.
The. -iiiivantiiges of iny invention result from the rise ol' the ilelieetors or distributers, which Cerise :i more intimate Contact o the nir with the colti pipe siii'iifiees, :intl also direct the tl'iriwing' water swiiy *from the 'iii-ills and over these pipes.
liliiiify variations may be iiiiitle in -e torno :incl iii'rzingeinent of the-ebonibeifs, cooling pipes, bii'll'ic plates or distributors, ete., withoiil departing from iny invention.
l elziim:
l. .in iin apparatus for drying ziir by re frigeriiixion, ii chiiiiiber eoi'itz'iining ii, series of vertical rows ol? cooling pipes, the rows iie'zirest the siile wells being spaced eport therefrom, srfiiil chamber having ilel'leetors or bellies eziientiiii tioi'n the wells inwardly to but nel beyond the adjacent. pipes .riingeil to oiroct the `air innoiig the coils, substantially ns clescriheil.
Q. in iipiiiiriiliis for lryiiignir by refrigeriition, u chsinber containing L series of 'vertical rows or' relirigerziting pipes, the rows nearest the wells being spaced eport thereiifroni, the walls of the Chamber homing projeeting baliles or ilellectors terminating :it or near the iidjiieeiit pipes, substantially ns described. I
3. ln zippiirzitiis 'for drying air by re ilrig'eriitioii, it chamber liiiving ai' series, of vertical rows oit cooling pipes, the rows neiii'est iihe siile wells being spaced apart therefrom, iiiciiiis for directing air through Sil the chamber, and baffles or delectors arranged to direct the air away from the walls and among the pipes, said baiies terminating at or near the pipes adjacent to the walls, substantially as described.
4. In apparatus for drying air by refrigeration, a chamber having a series of vertical rows of refrigerating pipes, the rows nearest the walls being spaced apart therefrom, spray pipes arranged to direct thawing liquid over the refrigerating pipes, the walls of the chamber having deectors ar"- ranged to direct the thawing liquid into contactwith the pipes, said baiiies terminating` at or near the pipes adjacent to the walls, substantially as described.
5. In apparatus for drying air by refrigeration, a cooling chamber having a series of refrigerating pipes therein, the pipes nearest the side wallsbeing spaced apart from said walls,' the o positc side walls having deflectors exten ing toward the nearest pipes and terminating at o1` adjacent thereto to allow a straight upward flow of the air while preventing it from channeling along the side walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES GAYLEY.
