e To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known that I, FRANZ THELiTz, merchant, a subject of the King o f Prussia, German Emperor, and residing at Hennef-onthe-Sieg, in tlie Kingdom of Prussia, Ger? understood, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings in 'whieh several ,embodiments are'represent'ed by way of ein;Y
am le, and in which :1- L igure 1 is a vertical section through one constructional form, Fig. 2 bein a crosssection through the same in the 1n the top of the drum; the lubricating oil which has been used can be uninterruptedly run into the drum through this feed pi 'e a. The latv Ater is open at its lower end an opens above a p plate c which is integral with or ri idly at.- t-ached to the drum b. The plate is rat-her larger than' the orifice in the drum, so that its edge projects beyond the limits of the orifice which are indicated by dotted lines. For rotating the drum, the shaft z of the same is provided with a ulley m which can be driven by a rope y. round the plate c there is arranged a conical insertion d, the upper end of which projects above the plate and the top openin` of which has a smaller diameter than the p ate c. At the lower edge of this conical insertion there are provided slots or holes through which the space in the drum un er the insertion is connected with the space in the drum above the inser- 50 tion. Near the up er end of the insertion b there is built into t e interior of the drum a partition e which has a central opening and is perforated like a sieve.- Radial plates u carrying the conical insertion. d and the par- L ged in the drum I).v Above this partition is situated the mouth ofawspifpe tition e are arran P ane in Fig. 1 Fig; 3 is a vertical section through' ed pipe a pi'o-V j fI which admits of the purified oil being continuously conducted away from the drum. '.Ihe. mouth of this pipe f. has a vertical pro-l ]ectin edge' g and the rim of the mouth is curve y'concentrically with the periphery of the drum. The partition e may also be perforated like a sieve near its interior edge only. Also it may be provided with a filter e', and moreover it may be conical in shape.
Theaction ofthe constructional form represented in Fig. 1 is as follows :The pipe a conducts the used lubricating oil to the plate c which rotates with the drum4 b when the latter is rotated and throws the oil flowing onto it to the outside. The used lubricating oil contains usually foreign constituents as dust, mud, coagulated oil-portions or like firm substances and water. The oil which lruns ofi' the plate c flows downward along lthe insertion d and 'arrives at the openings p in the lower edge of the same.
yconstituentsofthe oilI are sent to the outside, and pass' along the cone d into the lower part `lof the drum. The water and constituents less weighty than the oil go with the oil through the openings p of the conical inserytion 'dy while. the firm and more weighty ffreign'constitlients collect at the wall of the drum under the cone d and must be removed from time to time. The oil, which is largely liberated from impurities, Hows into the space bounded bythe drum b, insertion d and partition e, penetrates through the sievelike holes' in th .partition e, and in consequence of the centrifugal action fills the drum from the inner wall of the saine up to the limits indicated by the dotted lines. The function of the conical insertion d is to cause the oil and its impurities to be passed over a lon Way and to separate in the lower portion o the drum the more weighty impurities from the oil and to prevent them to be re-mixed with the purified oil collecting above the cone d. When the drum rotates, the rim g at the mouth of the pipe, f skims off the inner layer of the purified oil, the position of which layer is indicated by the dotted line v in Fig. 2. The oil which is thus taken up enters the pipe f and flows through the saine.
The constructional form represented in Figi', in which the feed pipe is not represented, lis not only suitable for continuously conducting away purified oil, but also for continuously carrying off the water which E In conse-1 quence of the centrifugal action the foreign Fig. 1. For drawing ofi'l the water which, together with the other impurities, collects at the wall of the drum, there is arranged under the cover l1, of the drum a radially directed pipe z' which is open at both ends.
AThe one end of the pipe z' extends nearly to the wall of the drumvand dips into the water which is at the periphery of the drum. Near the other end of the pipe z' there is in its wall a hole 0 which is in communication with the hole Z in the cover hof the drum.
v Into the pipe z' is screwed a hollow screw lc,
fthe drum.
f i' the position of which may be varied byl turning it. The position of the water in the drum can be regulated by means of this screw. The farther the screw is removed from the wall of the drum, the more liquid vcan collect in the drum and the deeper will be the layer of water, since the mouth of the screw forms simultaneously the outlet for the Water and the depth yof the layer of liquid is dependent on the distance of this outlet from the Wall of the drum. The
nearer the screw is approached to the wall,
ofthe drum, the less liquid can collect in the drum and the shallower will be the vlayer of Water. 'Ihe partition e is entirely made like a sieve, and is provided with a ltering layer e1. In this constructional form, as in those shown in Figs. l and 4, the drum is rotatedsby means of a rope y which drives a pulley m. on the shaft zof What I claim as my inventionl and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a centrifugal separator, for purifying used lubricating oil and the like, the combination of a revoluble drum having a central orifice in the top of the same, and a plate-like surface centrally in the drum of larger diameter than said orifice, a conical insertlon in the drum extending above said plate-like surface and having apertures at lts lowercircumference, a vhorizontal perforated partition fixed in the drum in immediate proximity to the top of said conical partition, and a skimming pipe having a lower circumference, a horizontal perforated partition fixed in the drum in immediate proximity to the top of said conical partition and a radially directed pi e mounted below the top of the drum an terminating at one end below said hole and at the other end near the periphery of the drum.
3. In a centrifugal separator, for purifying used lubricating oil and the like, the combination ofza revoluble drum havin a central orifice in the top of the same, an a plate-like surface centrally in the drum of larger diameter than said orifice, a conical insertion in the drum extending above said plate-like surface and having apertures at its lower circumference, a horizontal perforated partition xed in the drum in im mediate proximity to the top of said conical partition, and a radially directed pipe mounted below the top of the drum and terminating'at one end below said hole and at the other end near the periphery of the drum, said radially directed pipe being provided with a hollow adjustable screw.
lInwitne'ss whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
' FRANZ TI-IELITZ.
