Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. DEUEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll lahaffey, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cork-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a cork puller, and

1016 particularly to the class of foldable cork extractors.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cork extractor in which the pulling tines may be conveniently folded and held within a casing, whereby the said extractor may be readily carried in the pocket of the user, also that will permit the extraction of corks from varying sizes of bottle necks.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a cork extractor in which a cork may be removed from the neck of a bottle without puncturing or in any Way injuring the cork, thereby enabling it to be used indefinitely.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a cork extractor in which the tines thereof are capable of being unfolded and adjusted when in use, thus permitting the said extractor to be used for pulling different sized corks from bottles.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cork extractor which is simple of construction, durable, reliable and efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the hereunto appended claim.

In the drawings :F igure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a bottle neck showing the cork therein and the device applied thereto constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the extractor when in folded position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section view thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line -1-et of Fig. 2 one of the tines being shown in open position.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a portion of the neck of a bottle in which is mounted in the ordinary well known manner a removable cork 6, the same being merely shown to illustrate the manner in which it is to be extracted from the bottle neck by means of a cork extractor, as will be more fully hereinafter described.

The cork extractor comprises an elongated handle forming a casing including spaced side walls 7, bottom 8 and end walls 9, the handle being preferably constructed from a single piece of metal. The side walls are bent at their free longitudinal edges to provide inturned guide flanges 10 and within the casing are mounted slidable blocks 11 which latter are adapted to be adjusted toward and away from each other for a purpose as will be more fully hereinafter described.

Integral with or secured to the slidable blocks 11 are spaced bearing ears 12 between which are arranged the inner ends of cork extracting fingers or tines 13, the inner ends of the latter being connected to the bearing ears 12 by means of pivot pins 1 1 whereby the said tines or fingers 13 may be swung in or out of the casing. Fixed to the slidable blocks 11 are leaf springs 15, the free ends of which being projected between beveled faces 16 of the sliding blocks 11 and the inner ends of the tines or fingers 13, and are adapted to contact with the inner ends of the said fingers or tines so as to frictionally bear upon the pivoted ends of the tines or fingers for moving the same in folded relation within the casing or projected therefrom.

Formed centrally in the opposite side walls 7 of the casing or handle are alining guide slots 17 in which is arranged an abutment pin 18, the latter being formed at opposite ends of finger knobs 19. This pin is arranged in the path of the folding movement of the fingers or tines 13 so that when the latter have been folded within the easing, on the outward movement of the pin 18 in the guide slots 17 against the tines or finger 13 when in folded relation to each .other, will force the same out from the casing, whereby they may be pulled into position at right angles to the said casing or handle for their insertion within the bottle neck between it and the cork 6 therein. When the tines or fingers 13 have been inserted between the bottle neck and the cork 6 and it is desired to extract the said cork a slight turning movement of the handle will loosen the cork, thus enabling it to be pulled from the bottle neck.

It is obvious that by the slidable movement of the blocks 11 in the handle or casing the fingers or tines 13 may be moved toward and away from each other to vary the space therebetween, whereby diflerent sized corks may be extracted. When the tines or fingers 13 have been folded into the handle or casing, the extractor is in compact form, whereby it may be carried in a convenlent manner in the pocket of the user.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is A cork extractor of the class described, comprising a hollow casing, blocks slidably mounted within the casing, extracting tines pivotally connected with the blocks, springs carried by the blocks and acting upon the pivoted ends of the tines, and means arranged in the path of the folding movement of the tines and slidably connected with the casing for action against the tines, whereby the same may be separated for the ready pulling thereof from the casing.
