INDICATINGr-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
Application filed October 24, 1910. Serial No. 588,723.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARCUS AUEREACH', resident of 207 St. James street, in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in indicating-Locks, of which the fol lowing is a specilication.
The invention relates to improvements in indicating locks, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the Same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby at each and every time of opening, the lock mechanism is operatively connected with the recordingmechanism and the latter mechanism records by means of indicating hands through a peculiar multiple arrangement of toothed wheels.
rlhe objects of the invention are to devise a means of registering the number of times a door, case, or locked receptacle is opened, which cannot be tampered with, to provide a neat, durable and convenient form of device and generally to construct an indicating lock in a cheap and simple manner.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention as applied to a padlock, showing the indicating dials. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the interior mechanism in the same application of the invention. Fig. 3 is a. perspective detail of the key. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view on the line A-B in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the multiple arrangement of toothed wheels showing the upper wheels. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the multiple arrangement of toothed wheels showing the lower wheels. Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective detail of the grooved key post. Fig. S is a perspective detail of the rocking locking bar.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ligure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the back of the casing having the key plug hole 2 therethrough toward one side thereof.
3 is a key plug having a vertical slot 4 therein from end to end, said key plug being mounted on said back 1 in said hole 2.
5 is a vertical post having suitably spaced slots therein and rigidly secured to the back ladjacent to the key plug 3, said slots being :of the length thereof and rigidly secured to the back 1 and having at the upper end thereof an internal thread, thus it will be seen that the locking bar 6 is pivoted on the post 10 and on the insertion of the key into the key plug 3 and on the turning of said key, the bill hook end 7 of the locking bar G will be raised which will lower the lug endv 8 of said locking bar correspondingly.
11 is the shackle of the lock, having the curved face 12 bet-Ween the shoulders 13 `and 14. i
15 is a post extending through a corresponding pivot hole in the shackle 11 adjacent to the face 12 and rigidly secured in the back l immediately above the lug 8 so that the teeth 9 engages the shoulder 14 in the closed position of the shackle 11. The upper end of the post 15 is internally threaded.
1G is a post rigidly secured to the back 1 Vand internally threaded at its upper end and situated immediately below the other end of the shackle 11 and above the bill hook end 7 of the locking bar 6.
17 is a flat spring having the looped end 18 around the post 16 and engaged by a suitable upwardly curved projection 19 from the locking bar. The vother end of the spring 17 engages the shoulder 13 consequently the tension of said spring in the locked position of t-he shackle is constant between the shoulder 13 and the projection 19, therefore, when the said locking bar 6 is turned on its pivot and the too-th 9 released from the shoulder 14, the tension of said spring will cause the shackle 11 to turn rapidly on its pivot. y
2O is a plate supported by the side Shields 21 from the back 1 below the locking bar 6 and forming with said side shields a part casing for the multiple arrangement of wheels and the recording mechanism.
22 is a spindle j ournaled in the back land extending upwardly through the plate 20 and therebeyond. 23 is a toothed wheel fixedly mounted on said spindle 22 adjacent to the back 1.
24 is a sleeve turning on the spindle 22 and journaled in the plate and' extending upvvardly therebeyond.
25 is a toothed Wheel in ratchet form, and
fixedlymounted on the sleeve 24 immediately under the plate 20.
26 is a finger fixedly securedf aty one end to the sleeve 24 and extending laterally therefrom.
27 is a spindle journaled in the back 1 and. in the plate 2O and extending above saidI plate.
28 is a toothed Wheel fixedly mounted on the spindle 27 intermediate of the distance between the plate 20 and the back 1 and in alinement With the finger 26, said finger extending into engagement with said Wheely 28.
29 is a finger at oneend fixedly secured on thel spindler 27 andA extending laterally from said 'spindle into engagement Withl the Wheel 23. I
It vvillr be understood from the arrangementofvvheelsjust described, that the operation of the ratchet Wheel 25 will insure the operation of all the Wheels in rotation, that is to say, as'the finger 26 is rigidly secured to theratchet wheel sleeve shaft 24, at each complete revolution of the said ratchet Wheel 25, the said finger 26 will turn said toothed Wheel 28 to the extent of one tooth. This happens at every complete revolution of the said wheel 25 and on the turning of the said toothed Wheel 28a completelrevolution, the finger 29 Will engage the toothedV Wheel 23 and turn it to the extent of one tooth, it requiring the number of revolutions of the Wheel 28 corresponding to the number ofk teeth on the Wheel 23 to turn the latter a complete revolution.
30 is a spring finger or pawl rigidly secured to the lug 8 at the lower end thereof and extending from saidv lug. into engagement With the ratchet toothed Wheel 25,
' consequently at each rock` of the locking bar 6 through the operation of the key in the key plug 3, the ratchet toothed Wheel 25 will be turned to the extent of one toot-h. 5o
31 is a; checking'pawl of suitable spring material rigidly secured to the back- 1 and extending' therefrom into engagement with the ratchet toothed'vvheel 25,. ahead ofV the finger pawl`30.
32 is a check paWl of suitable` spring material secured tothe back 1 and engaging the toothed Wheel 23.
33 isa shield extending partially around the Wheel28 protecting the same, said Wheel 28 rubbing said shield slightl'y'to sti-li'en the operation.
34 is the cover completely closing in the mechanism described having holes 35 through which the posts 16,15' andf V16 project, fthe keyhole 36I andthe dial casings 37 and 38 surrounding the spindle holes 39 and 40 through which the spindles 22 and 27 project respectively and the sleeve 24 through the spindle hole 40.
41 is` a dial spaced by a suitable number of markings corresponding to the number `of teeth on the Wheel 28, said markings be- `1ng indicated on the turning of said Wheel byl the hand 42: which is secured on the top ofthe spindle 27.
44 is a dial having a double row of markings spacing the said dial off correspondingly to the ratchet toothed wheel 25 and the toothed Wheel 23 respectively, said markings being indicated by the hand 45 secured to the sleeve 24 and the hand 46 secured to the spindle 22 respectively.
47 are screws inserted into the posts 10, 15 and 16 retaining said cover 34 securely to said back 1.
48 is a key to beinserted through the key hole 36 into the key plug 3, the Wards of said key corresponding as regards distancing to the slots in the key post 5 and havinga slight bend to engage the bill hook end 7 of. the locking bar 6.
In the operation of this invention, the key is inserted as described and engages the bill hook end of the locking bar and this rocks the said locking bar on its pivot post which releases the tooth 9 from engagement with the shoulder 14, the shackle 11 is thus sprung outwardly as` the tooth 9 slips from behind the shoulder 14. Coincidently with this movement of they shackle and the locking bar, the spring finger 30 engages the master or ratchet toothed. Wheel 25 and turns said ratchet tooth Wheel to the extent of one tooth, this turns the hand 45 to the extent of one space on its corresponding dial and marks the lock as having been opened once. This operation is continued until the hand has traveled completely around the dial when it will be found on the last stroke that the hand 42 has turned to the extent of one space on its corresponding dial through the action. of the finger 26 in engagement with the Wheel 28. After the hand 42 has covered the dial 41 then the hand 46 is operated through the finger 29 in engagement with the Wheel 23.
The multiplicity by this arrangement of recording mechanism Will be readily understood as in the first place, the ratchet Wheel must turn to the full extent of the number of its teeth before the second Wheel is op- Wheels of 24, 12 and 18 teeth respectively,
taking them as the first, second and third Wheels according to their operation, the number of times that the lock opens that may be recorded is over live thousand, there fore, the increase in the number of teeth Will naturally increase that total tremendously.
This mechanism has been described herein as applied to a padlock, which is the most convenient form of device for the use of this invention, but it Will readily be understood that various applications of the invention may be made, such as applying it to door locks, desk locks and other things, though the general form and arrangementof the mechanism Will remain substantially the same, however, a certain latitude of construction Will likely be desirable, so long as the salient features pointed out in the claims for novelty following are adhered to.
