GAS-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented slept. 5, .l 911.
Application filed Bay 20, 1909. Serial No. 497,196.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VICTOR ALEXANDER Rm'r on, a subject of Grcdt Britain, end' be rendered incandescent when the lamp is in use, andit consists 1n the novel features,
structure and combinations of parts hereinafter described, end more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The objectof my invention is to provide an improved lamp having a general appearance npproximatlng that of an electric arc lamp and rovided with inverted burners and suspen ed mantles.
Referringto the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side sectional View of the lamp; Fig. 2- is a modification of the same lamp; Fig. 3 is a view partly in section, of the multiple burner; l ig. 4 is a top plan of the burner; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of the burner; Fig. (5 is an enlarged view 'of the gas-and air mixer, showing part of the antishock device; Fig. 7 is a top plan'of the mantle plate showingthe guides 15; Fig. 8 is n bottom plan ofthe mantle plate, art of it being removed for-convenience -o .dravw ing; Fig. 9 is stop section on the'line AA of Fig. 1; Fig. 10 is an enlarged sectional view of *t-he. supporting rod Fig. '11 an alternative to Fig. 6; Fig. 12 shows art of u mantle plate with the mantle ho der in position.
In the drawings 9 designates the exterior shell df the lamp 25 a, chimney therein, 10 the burner, 13 t .ma'ntle supportin plate, 100 a glass lob'e rotecting the mantles and suspended rom t e'lower edge of said exterior 'shell,'1 the gas-supplyi e from which the lamp is suspended, 2 8'50 low ball coupling screwed onto the lower end of said its vertical branch "with a-menually ope'rplate,
a'tive'valve fitting 5 for opening and closing the gas passage through the some and havingflat its lower end a. controlling nozzle (5 equipped with a regulating needle 8 and projected Within the outer and la end of the said tube 7, which is rigid with the burner.
.The exterior shell 9 will of ornamental. configuration, by preference, and it secured by a screw 101 to a collar 102 on the pipe 1 andby a screw 103 to the coupling 2, said screws extending horizontally througzi'i holes in said shell and the chimney 25 and. serving to did in 'suspendin' the cllimncy and securing it in position. lilsuully I shall employ only the screw 1.03, which is sulficient under all ordinary conditirms. The horizontal portion of the pipe extends through holes in the shell 9 and chimney 25 and by entering the coupling 2 aids in suspending t-he lamp and maintaining the proper relation of said shell and chimney to eo-l'zh other. The screw 103. coupling and horizontal branch of the pipe 5 are amply sullicient for suspending the lamp and passed directly thrmlgrh the shell and chimney and screwed into the ciuipling Q.
The chimney 25 is preferably listed at he lower end, and within the enlarged ion-c:- end of the chimneyds loculed tlu: burner il which Will preferably be of cast metal and suspended from the coupling 2 by means oi a ro'd lG,which may, if desired. have inn-rposed between its upper and lmwr parts or sections a cu'shioningspring 1T intended to absorb shocks or-ja'irs. i
The burner lO'is hollow and it has projecting. downwardly from it at ecyuiwlisltnut points n series of heads ll which enter and discharge the mixed and nir into ihc mantles lil. The burner 10 is provided an one side with the inlet lube or pipe T, whi h extends horizontally through the chinnn-y 25 and'shell 9 and is of bell-shape at its outer end. as shown. The nozzle 6. for {gas projects into the open mouth of-the tube 7 and capable of-ready manufacture.
extending a pipe 4 mixture filling the chamber ithin the burner and discharging through the heads 11.. l preferably provide within the burner 10 a sheet of gauze '22 to aid in compelling av thorough admixture of the gas and air. ithin the outer end of the tube 7 and surrounding the inwardly projecting end of the nozzle. 6, may he provided a helical spring 18 to serve as a cushioning or shock-absorbing medium. The burner 10 is provided with a collar 104 and screw 105 for convenience in connecting it with the rod by' I which it IS suspended.
The mantle support ing plate 13 is in the form of a horizontal disk having a central opening or sleeve 27 to he slipped upwardly .uponthe rod 16,
which in addition to its other duties, serves to properly center said plate with relation to the burner 10.. lhe plate 10 contains openings-14 through which the'mant-les 12- m ay be inserted, the. shoulder around the open upper end of the mantles serving to prevent the mantles. from escaping downwardly from the plate 13. The plate 13 is formed around the openings 145 with upwardly extending; flanges 15' to house the upper edges of the mantles. The. plate 13 is adjustably secured in position by a setscrew and hence may be raised and lowered at will. Vithin the'chimney 25 I preferably provide a protecting wall 2% for shielding from the heatthe coupling 2 and so much of the pipe 3 as may be withinthe chimney.'
in Figs. 2
and 10 1 show a modification of a portion of my lamp residing mainly in coupling'Q to provide pilot burner-tips 19 for lighting the lamp when the gas is turned on by the opening of the valve 5. The flow of gas to the tips 5 and its flow to the burner regulated by the needle 9. The mixture of gas and air passes through the. tube 7 to the burner 10 and thence through- 12, which. on the liuhtingttof the gas at the heads 11, become incandescent.
My invention provides a la-mp of great effi iency and one of very durable chara titfir e arran cement of the pipe 3 is a very desirable feature. since said pipe comprises simply two right-angular branches, with the vertical b anch fully exposed and having the valve 5: and nozzle. 6, while-the horizontal branch may be passed directly through the gas, the
downwardly from the.
19 may be controlled by a.- scrcw 20 and needle point- .21. In Fig. 2 I
