U-TE s rarns PATENT FFIOE.
HAIR-CUTTING DEVICE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911.
Application filed September 13, 1910. Serial No. 581,816.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, ROBERT CAMPBELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and Stateof New York, haveinvented new and.
useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Devices, ofwhich the following isa specification. v
This invention relates to a device for1cut ting or trimming hair and is of that type including a toothed member or comb and a razor or cutting blade disposed adjacent thereto for cut-tingthe ends of the hair gathered between theteeth of the comb.
The invention has for one of'its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be comparatively simple and ineX- pensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily manipulated for cutting the hair to any desired length.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved blade-holding means whereby the cutting edge of the blade can be readily adjusted to the comb and whereby the blade can be easily removed for sharpening or honing.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the blade holder inverted or in open position.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the bottom plate of the device which is prolonged atone end into a handle 2 and in the front edge of the plate are teeth 3 that form a comb for gathering the ends of the hair to be cut or trimmed. On one end of the comb is an upwardly-extending member 4 to which is connected, by a hinge 5, anupper plate 6 that forms a blade holder, the said blade holder being capable of opening outwardly by means of the hinged connection between: the-two plates. On the plate or section 1 atthe inner end ofthe'comb is an upwardly-extending I post or. member 7 which has a threaded opening 8 for receiving a screw 9 that passes through an upstanding-lug 10 on the inner end of the upper-plate 6 so as to hold the latter in closed position. By loosening this screw from the post 7 the-upper plateor blade holder can be swung upwardly and outwardly to open position for permitting the blade 11 to be taken: out for sharpening or any other purpose.
The bladell may be of any desired form, the one shown in the present instance being of the hollowground type, and this blade is mounted inplace-so that its cutting edge can be adjusted toward .or from the teeth 3 of the comb. On the under side of the plate 6 are spaced lugs 12 that have recesses 13 that form seats for the back edge of the razor blade, and on the plate dis a leaf spring 1-1 which engages under the blade and presses the latter upwardly in the seats 13, so that the spring cooperates with the seats for holding the backof theblade firmly in place while at the same time permitting the blade to tilt in the said seats to adjust the cutting edge in proper relation to the comb. This adjustment is effected by screws 15 which are threaded in the top plate 6 so as to bear on the upper side of the blade adjacent the ends thereof. The spring 14: tends to throw the cutting edge of the blade upwardly and yieldingly maintains the blade against the lower ends of the screws, and hence by turning the screws in one direction the cutting edge of the blade can be moved downwardly toward the comb against the tension of the spring 14, whereas a reverse turning of the screws will cause the cutting edge of the blade to be moved upwardly by the spring. It will thus be seen that the adjustment of the blade can be easily and quickly accomplished, and furthermore a wide range of adjustment is provided. The blade is carried entirely by the plate 6 so that when the latter is thrown open, the blade will be easily accessible for removal. One of the lugs 12 maybe long enough to form a stop to limit the closing movement of the plate or holder 6, by engaging the bottom plate 1 or comb so as to prevent the cutting edge of the blade from coming acci dentally in contact with the comb. In the operation of the device, the teeth of the comb are passed through the hair to be cut or trimmed and the ends of the hair gathered between the teeth will be cut by the blade coming in contact therewith. As the blade is held at a fixed distance from the comb, the hair can be readily trimmed to the proper length, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a comb, a plate hingedly connected at one end thereof and extending longitudinally over the comb, a member extending upwardly from the comb, means for fastening the plate to the said member, a blade carried by the plate with its cutting edge in cooperative relation with the comb, seats on the plate in which the back of the blade bears, a spring on the plate for yieldingly holding the blade in its seats, and screws on the plate engaging the blade for adjusting the position thereof with respect to the comb.
2; A device of the class described comprising a bottom plate formed with a handle at one end and provided with teeth in one edge adjacent the opposite end to form a comb, a member extending upwardly from the comb end of the plate, a member extending upwardly from the plate between the comb and handle portions thereof, an upper plate hinged atone end to the first member and extending over the comb, means for detachably fastening the opposite end of the upper plate to the second member, and adjustable blade-holding means carried by the upper plate. j
3. A device of the class described comprising a bottom plate formed with a handle at one end and provided with teeth in one edge adjacent the opposite end to form a comb, a member extending upwardly from the comb end of the plate, amember extending upwardly from the plate between the comb and handle portions thereof, an upper plate hinged at one end to the first member and extending over the comb, means for detachably fastening the opposite end of the upper plate to the second member, a blade disposed between the comb and upper plate, and adjustable means for mounting the blade wholly on the upper plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT CAMPBELL.
