PIPELWBENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 2 9, 1911, appneauon ma4 october 17,1910. serial 110,587,561.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it `known that I, OSCAR J. WATTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at State of Kansas, haveinventied certainnew and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to 'be2' a full, clear, and exact description of ther invention,sucl1 as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertans to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches, and particularly to an improved device of. this character,- having jaws adapted to be locked to'a`pipe. i
The object of the invention is to vprovide a wrench in which the jaws are yieldingly quick applicationto a pipe. y Withthe above andother objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel featuresof construction, and combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim. j y i In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts- Figure 1 illustrates a a` similar view, part of the handle being broken away to show. theconnection of the jaws thereto, and Fig. 3 is an edge View of the wrench shown in Fig. v1.
In the drawings 1 represents aI handleV bifurcated at its upper end, asat 2, for receiving the ends of a short jaw lever 3 and ally connected at 5 to the end of the bifurcated portion of the handle, and has substantially'the form of theletter S, terminating in a concave serrated jaw 6. The lever 4 is ing jaw 7 is opposite the jaw 6, the said levers beinglconnected together by a pivotal pin 8. The sides 9 of the bifurcated portion of the handle are' provided with alining having a wing nut 13, which is ada ted to secure theparts in locked position a ter the jaws 6 and 7 have been applied to a pipe. -By means of a ycoiled spring 14, connecting 'the levers below the pivotal pin 48, quickV `action of the jaws is obtained.
In applying my improved wrench the jaws are pressed against thepipe, thereby causing them to open and the bolt 12 tor slide upwardlyin the slots 10. By operating the handle vin the usual manner'the jaws grlp the pipe, and the wing nut 13 may be adjustedto lock them in operative position.
Although the elements herein shown and described are .well adapted to serve the purposes for whichthey are intended, it is ,tovbe .understood that slight changes ma be made in. the precise construction set orth slots l0, extending at a downwardly in- Vclined angle toward the upper end thereof. Passingthrough the inclined slots 10 andlan aperturelll in the lever 4 is a boltv 12,
without departing from the spirit of 'the inp vention. l
Having fully described Imy invention, what I claim is:
A wrench comprising a bifurcated handle, an oppositely curved lever, the longer curved portlon lbeing lpivoted to the end of the bifurcated handle, and the shorter portion terminating in a serrated jaw, a similar lever arranged with its jaw opposite the jaw of 'the first mentioned.r lever and connected thereto by a pivot, a coil spring connecting the longer curved portions ofsaid levers and adapted to close said jaws, the sides of the bifurcated handle being provided with diagonally extending slots, and a bolt eX- tending'through said slots and the end ofr Vthe second-mentioned lever, substantially as described. L
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence 'of two witnesses.
. OSCAR J. WATTS.
