EDWIN C. DICKINSON, OF TALCO'IT, WEST VIRGINIA.
GATE-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911.
Application filed January 5, 1910. Serial No. 536,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. DICKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Talcott, in the county of Summers and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in latches for gates and the object of the in vention is to simplify and improve the existing art by providing a latch which locks automatically when the gate is closed, which may be readily and easily opened and which embodies certain peculiar features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
With the above and other objects in .view which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate and post therefor, embodied with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a swinging gate and 2 the post therefor.
The numeral 3 designates the latch proper. This latch comprises an attaching plate & having a centrally arranged vertically extending enlargement 5. The enlargement is provided adjacent its lower end with a pair of outwardly projecting spaced ears 6, and the plate 5 between the said ears 6 is formed with a rounded extension 7 which is adapted to serve as a stop for a substantially U-shaped member 8.
The plate 5 is removably connected with the plate 1, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the substantially U- shaped member 8 is pivoted between the ears 6 concentric of the lower portion of the plate 5 between the ears so that said rounded portion 7 will serve as a stop to limit the U-shaped member in one direction. The said U-sha-ped member has its inner arm of a greater length than its outer arm and the said inner arm has its upper portion rounded to provide a lip 9.
The numeral 15 designates a flattened spring member connected with the plate 4 as at 16, while the lower face of the spring member is formed with a transversely arranged projection 17 which serves as a contact member for the lip 9 of the member 8.
The numeral 14 designates the pivot whereby the substantially U-shaped member is connected between the ears 6, while the numeral 18 designates a stud which projects laterally from the post and lies within the path of the gate and which is adapted to be contacted between the arms of the member 8 so that the said U-shaped member will be swung upon its pivot 14 to have its larger arm engaged by the offset 17 of the member 15.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a swinging door or gate and a' post therefor, of a stud projecting laterally from the post and within the path of the gate or door, said gate or door being provided with a securing plate, an enlargement removably connected with the plate, said enlargement having its lower extremity curved outwardly and being provided with a pair of ears adjacent the said curved portion, a U-shaped member pivotally connected between the ears concentric of the rounded portion between the ears, so that the said rounded portion will serve as a stop to limit the swinging of the U- shaped member in one direction, the said U-shaped member having its inner arm of a greater length than its outer arm, the said inner arm having its upper portion rounded to provide a lip, a flattened spring member connected with the plate and overlying the enlarged member therefor, the outer face of the said spring member being formed with a projection, and said projection adapted to engage the lip of the longer arm of the U-shaped member to sustain the said member parallel with the plate and the enlargement after the said U-shaped member has been contacted and swung upon its pivot by the stud of the post.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN C. DICKINSON.
