Description

ISA-AC T. SMITH, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 100,201, dated February 22, 1870.
IMPRO'VED BRAKE .AND RATCHET FOR ELEVATING- AND LOWERING- BUCKETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patet and making part of the same To all whom it'may concern:
. Be akn'own'aat I, ISAAC T. smmof Richmond,
addition to the brake-wheel and ratchet-teeth on the Vinside of thesame as before used, an additional set of segments. of a rim a sufcient distance apart to allow vthe pawl to pass through when the brake is applied for lowering, vso that after the brake-wheel has acquired an accelerated motion from the descent of the bucket or otherweight being lowered, thepawl cannot. again fall into the ratchet-wheel untilV the velocity has been arrested by the proper use ofthe brake-lever, or from Then it will resume its position as at first, in Contact with the ratchet-wheel teeth.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I. describe the construction as applied toa common windlass for drawing water, or as used in connection with H. M. `Smiths patent' of 1866.A
Construct curb A with caps B B.
Make windlfass C on the end hand brake-wheel D, which'I make in this case abouteight inches diameter with one and one-half inch face for brake-pad.
This rim projects oneaud one-quarter inch from the Hange supportingit, and has ratchet-teeth on the interior surface, as shown, Figures 2 and 3.
Insideof this' ratchet, leavinga clear space of threeeighths of anl inch, I attach as many teeth or segments as there are ratchet-teeth marked 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,. 6.
These are attached to the main flange, and project even with the first brake and ratchet-wheel. .y
. The brake-lever E, I make of wrought or malleable iron, Figure 4, perspective, showing handle F, journal G, pad H, pawlI.
When the pawl is applied to the brake-wheel, the pawl I should just clear the inside ofthe segments 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Then atl rest the pawl I rests in the ratchet, by reason of the weight of the handle.
To operate, raise the handle F, which throws the pawl from the ratchet and through the space between the segments. Then the bucket -or weight will be lowered at the will ofthe operator, and if, by accident,
the handle should be dropped, the pawl cannot fall into the ratchet.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
The interior segmented rim upon the ratchet-wheel, to prevent the pawl from falling back into the ratchet whilst in rapid motion, and thus preventing accidents, as above described and set forth.
