Description

W. BALL. -RAILWAY MOVING MACHINE.
@Alf/M @www ittted' ,Quintet @wat @Wina WILLIAM BALL, OF'WILMINGTGN, OHIO.
Leers Pam: Naoaees, dated acabe/r 19,1369.,
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent' and making part of the same.
this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference -marked thereon.
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a representation of a central longitudinal section of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detached view ofthe compound lever.
Figure 4 is a detached bottom view of the axle.
My iuventionielates toa means for moving cars, and other heavy bodies, running upon wheels on railwaytracks, or any smooth surface; and consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of devices whereby this object is satisfactorily attained.
The letters H H designate the timbers, forming the frame of my machine.
Theyare connected by the crossbeams'h h.
The letters A A designate the wheels, upon which the machine moves. For railroad-work they are ilanched to suit the track. They are of cast-iron, and made very stout and strong.
To the inner side of eachwheel is'rmly attached a ratchet-wheel, B, several inches smaller in diameter than the wheel A.
Rigidly secured to each wheel is its axle C, having two iianches, c' and c", and a spindle-end, a, which is inserted into one end of the coupling D.
E designates a movable ring, having a groove iu its bore,l to fit on a corresponding longitudinal rib formed on the axle, whereby it is prevented from revolving on the axle.
F designates a forked lever, pivoted to the met-al bar k, at f, and '\vorkingin a groove circumscribing the vring Ervwhereby the teeth of the ring and coupling D are made to interlock, when it is desired to work both wheels together as if they had a common axle. Thus the (vheels may be worked independently or not. as desire 'Ihe forked lever Fand ring E'may also be used as a brake, by forcing the outer rim of the ring against the collar d ofthe axle.
Gis the bearing-plate of the coupling D.
L L, the journal-platesof the axles, iitting between the anches c and d', and braced bythe central struts nn, of the braces N N.
P P are the moving-levers, each of which is forked at the fulcrum p, and terminates in the hinged hooks p' and p, which work respectively, above and below,
in the -teeth of the ratchetawheel B. When it is desired to use the lower hook p", so as to give a pushing movement, the upper hook is thrown back from the ratchet-wheel.
The connecting-bar s, of the levers r r, is released from the pin t, thus allowing the coiled' spring g to hold the hook p" against the ratchet-wheel.
-In order to givea pulling movement, the upper hook p' is thrown forward on the ratchet-wheel, withwhich it engages, by its weight, and the lower hook p" is held back from the teeth of the ratchet-wheel by means of the levers o' r and'pin t, easily adjusted.
In order to connect this machine with a car, or other heavy body, Ithe double leverM M' is used.
M is 'the long operating-lever, having its fulcrum, m, secured to the central timber H, at its junction .with the cross-beam It.
V is a ratchet-bar, serving to hold the lever M in any desired position.
M' is the biting-lever, pivoted to the lever M, and forked, terminating in the two teeth t' t, between which and the upper surfaces of the beams H lzI the platform of a car, or other accessible 'part of any heavy body, is seized, and held securely.
The forked lever M works in the two fulcra m m', secured to the beams H H, near their ends.
' It is apparent thatl the wheels A A will always be pressed firmly against the track, and, therefore, but little liable to slip, as the weight and moving-power are applied at opposite ends4 of the machine.
' In furtherance of this object, the-levers I are so arranged that the power is always applied to them by bearing down.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure,
by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the wheel A, the compound lever P, spring g, aud ratchet-wheel B, substantially as set forth. i
2. The moving-machine, herein described, having ratchetFwheels I S B, compound levers I P, forked double lever M M', braces N N, coupling D, forked levers F F, and toothed rings E, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as, speciiied.
In testimony that Iclaini the above, I have hereunto subscribed my mame, in the presence of ltwo witnesses.
