j mnovemerrrm PAPER-BOX Mensa,
'I'he sehedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom, it-may concern; 7 e
.Be it known that I, DANIEL Snmoxs, Jr., of the city and State of New York, have invented and made shew and useful Improyement in For-mars for Paper- B-ox Machines; and I do-hereby declare the following to be acorrect description of the same.
'Inthefmannfectnre of paper boxes, 21. formerhas been employed that is divided into sections to bee):- pended within the ring of paper forming the cylindrical portion of "the box, to shapethesnnie and support it while the bottom is introduced and secured. My invention relates to the former itself, wherein it contractilemetallic'ring is conibined with a. clampingspring insueh a manner est-o receive and hold the end ot' the'strip of paper while being rolled up to form the.
cylindrical part of the box and receive the boti'om-or disk of paper, and be attached thereto by the external.
. covering paper. After this the ring is-allowed to contract and free itself from the boic as the former is withdrawn.
Tillie mechanism for operating the former, pressing up'the disk of paper forming the top or bottom ofthe box, pressing on the covering paper, and: otherwise finishing the host, being vell known, need not herein he described,especially in view of tbe fact that a machine of this kind forms the-subject of a separate application for a patent heretofore filed by Daniel Simmonsf in the drawing ilcignre'l is a face view of the former with the ring contracted;
' Figure 2 ise similnr'view witlrthe ring expanded;
Figure 3 is aseetion longitudinally of the-axis of the former; I
Figure 4 is a; View sidewise of the expanding-ring; and
The arbor a is formed oi'n' pipe, so as to be revolved upon any suitable gndgeon; I The recess b in suid ar- I bor allows a clutch or lever to be applied at this point for moving the m'bjor aand former ,e'ndn'ise upon its snpp'erting .gudgeon, to bring said former up against the, disk of paper or draw said former back for takingi off the. box.
The block a surrounds the arbor a, and can .slide thereon. The arbor a is made as a square ban or 1111113, and the block cslidesnpon ,this'sqnare bar,
and'is limited indtsmovcmnt b'v said collar 2 'and frnstnin 3. s
The block 0 is cylindrical, and of a size'sin'aller than the box to be made, and said'blook c iseithersoljd or lnade of pieces secured permanently together, to facilitate manufacture or repair. f I I Around the, block 0 is the contractile metallic ring f, that is made with n cent-rel tongue, 4, between-two side-tongues, 5, (see'fi .'-4,) so that this ring f can be expandedtothe size oi'theeinterior of the box by the ,pyrzn'nidnl f'rustum .3 acting upon theiuner ends of the ring allowed to contract by the reverse movement,
In order to hold. the end-of the strip of material'that .is n'o'underonnd the ring f, when expanded, I make use of the spring-clamp 7;, having teeth, 7, at one end,
being attached at the other end, and having the hitch extending froin't'he inner side of the clan p'l to, the angle of the pyramidal frnstlrni 3. v e 1 This angle of the frus'tum is, made with an incline; 3, angle catch, 9., and-es the block 1; is slipped back, the incline S liftsthe latch i, and the spring-clzimpk at the same timethat the ring f is expanded by the frnstunr 3 acting npon thestuds 71 3 \Vhen the end of the strip of mnteria-lhns been entered'under the end of'the ohjnnp k, that clamp is pressed down, and the end of the hitch 5 takes the catch 43, holding the material'firmly, and when the box is formed and-the ill nor a is drawn baol ,'tl1e catch 9 draws away from the latch 'i, at the same time-that the studs]: are liberated, the ring contracts, and the box is free to 'be removed. Figure 5 shows a, portion of the arbor of the fez-men.
I claim as my in.vcntion--- combination with the contractile ring j; studs h, spring:-
olnmp 7:, and latch i, substantially as setforth.
' Dated December 22, A.D. 1869.
