JAMES G. CURTIS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. M. I-IULSE COMPANY, OF
COLUMBUS, 01110, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SOFA OB DIUJENPORT BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented Aug. 2!), 191] Application filed November 10. 1909. Serial No. 527,140.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. James G. (linens. a citizen of the United States, residing at tohnnbns. in the county ot l ranklin and t 'tate of Ohio. have invented a certain new i is an elevation ot the Io'tt hand end (it the structure with the end piece ot the main frame removed and showing the parts closed or in davenport or sot'a forming position. l ig. 2 a sin'iilar view with the same parts opened to bed-torming position. Fig. 3 is a section longitudinally on the line a at Fig. l but showing both ends of the main frame and with the central portion broken out. Fig. 1: is a plan view ot the frame in seat carrying the bed.
The frame. which is best shown in Fig. 1-. is a rectangular structure comprised ot' the front and rear rails T and 6 respectively and two end pieces t the latter deeply notched out at their rear corners, as shown at t". to make room For the rear edge of the seat when that member is raised at its forward edge.
The main end pieces l of the structure are made ornamental as usual and are detachablv connected to the interi'nediate lrame shown in Fig. -il by means of bolts and nuts. v tlld end pieces t support the structure on the floor as usual.
The back 7. in the instance shown. consists of a suitably upholstered 't'rame pivoted to the end pieces 4." at their upper portions as seen at 7 or so that its lower edge can be swung rearward from ordinary sofa or davenport position. The seat 8 consists of a suitably upholstered Frame hinged at its rear portion between the ends 4: by hinges 8 secured to the seat frame and to the uppermost rear corner of the end memhere 4 of the rectangular frame so that the seat frame can be tilted back into the notches t". The seat S has secured to its ends near its rear portion rigid arms 9 extending downward t'roni the under side thereot, and pivoted at It) to the ends of these is the bed Frame It). The bed-carrying trame it) is provided with an ordinary folding spring comprising spring frame members it and 12 pivoted to short intermediate connecting members 13. the latter being pivotallv supported on standards 1% secured to the bed carrying 'ran'ie.
l? are legs t'or supporting the outer member l2 when the bed is extended and 16 are links tor causing the spring member ll to level horizontally with the members 19 and i when the bed is opened.
l is a mattress tor the spring.
H are catch or prop arms pivoted. to the ends of the seat trame and extending torwardly. said arms having notches to engage pins secured to the ends t oi the rectangular trame shown in Fig. -il. The catch arms is have dogs 18 automatically opera tive by moving the seat to release thi arms ti-om the pins 19. The tunction oi the arms [F is to latch and prop the seat in raised I position when the bed is to he extended. .llv which the seat and bed are mounted, the
pressing the seat when in raised position at the top rearward the latch arms 18 can be released to let the seat; down a'lter the bed has been tolded up toward and secured to the seat. The said latch arms are of. a kind in common use and no claim is made to them by themselves.
39 designates a hook seraired to a cross piece 3t at the under side of the seat said hook being designed to engage a headed pin 22 on the spring frame it) so that the spring head can be raised and lowered with the seat.
The seat and back are connected by links so that when the seat is raised the lower portion of the back is pushed rearward out ol position to interfere with the moven'ient ot the rear edge of the seat. lVhen the bed. is extended or unfolded to bed position it, can rest on the Front: rail ti.
lt will be observed that the 'tran'ie in which the seat and bed are carried braces the davenport ends and that those ends in turn brace the said ti-ante. The seat and bed do not require nice adiustmenti with rc'teronce to the davenport ends. The device can be knocked down For shipment: by simply removing the davenport ends after which the back can be folded down on the seat reducing the structure, minus the davenport ends, to compact form with all the parts united and ready for erection by application of the davenport ends thereto.
What I claim is:
1. In a combined sofa or davenport and bed, a rectangular frame, a seat hinged at its rear portion thereto to be raised and lowered, said seat carrying a frame containing an extensible bed, means for supporting the seat in raised position independently of the said bed frame, and sofa or davenport ends rigidly connected with the ends of said rectangular frame. v
2. In a combined sofa or davenport and bed, a rectangular frame having its upper rear portions notched or cut away, a seat hinged at its rear portion to said ends at their upper corners so as to be raised and lowered said seat carrying a frame containing an extensible bed, means for supporting the seat in raised position independently of its said frame, and sofa or davenport ends rigidly connected with the ends of said rectangular frame.
3. In a combined sofa or davenport and bed, a rectangular frame having its upper rear corners notched or cut away, a seat hinged at its rear portion to said ends so as to be raised and lowered said seat carrying a frame containing an extensible bed,
automatically releasable means for supporting the seat in raised position independently of the bed, and sofa or davenport ends rigidly connected with the ends of said rectangular frame.
4. In a combined sofa or davenport and bed, a rectangular frame, a seat hinged at its rear portion thereto to be raised and lowered, said seat carrying a frame containing an extensible bed, means for supporting the seat in raised position, a back linked to the seat and adapted in the dismounted position of the parts and while linked to the seat to fold against the seat, and sofa or clavenport ends rigidly connected with the ends of said rectangular frame.
In a combined sofa or davenport and bed, a rectangular frame having its upper rear portions notched or cut away, a seat hinged at its rear portion to said ends so as to be raised and lowered, said seat carrying a frame containing an extensible bed, automatically operative locking and supporting means for sustaining the seat in raised position said locking and supporting means ex tending forwardly and engaging the frame, and davenport ends rigidly connected with the ends of the rectangular frame.
