Description
, Odillilll I $13125- Letters Patent No. 100,156, 'dated FMa/ry 22, 1870.
IMPRovsD STEAM enorme-WASHER. J
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent making part'v of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN T. LAMB,-0' Davenport, in the county of Scott, and Stute of Iowa, havev y vinvcntm certain Improvements in u. Steam Clothes Washer, of which the following is u. specii'uuition, refcrence being hmlto the accompanying drawings..
' My'inventon relates to wash-boilezs,and consistsin the novel construction sind arrangement'of a. steam clothes-washer, for insertion wit-bin a. wash-boiler, und so as to be both adjustable und removable. In the dmwingsl Figure 1 is a. longitudinal vertical section of my device, :ind 1 Figure 2 is al top plan view. ln construetim,r my steam .clothes-washer A, I take s any suitable sheet metnhsuchnstin, Yor ,sheet-copper turned, :uid make an oblong-shaped cover, B, with its edge e tint, and extending nt its ends l1 ihr enough to be bent downward and. around the lapping ends oi' n rim, E, asg'elea-rly shown in both tigures, :and with its middle portion, from cach of the ends b to the center,
raised, :is also shown in the figures. The raised 'portion of the cover may be di-.mxoinl-shupcd, ovni, or in any other forni,l provided onlyitiuclinesiiom its lower t edge to the'centcr or its highest pointA In the center of lthis raised portion make a hole or opening, d, :ind connect to the cover, immediately over this opening, n pipe or tube, C, und on the npperend .of the tube place :i cap,'1), with openings on euch` side, and curveddeiicetors, E, nr-r ranged within, mid with their fncesturued toward the openings, :is clearly shown in iig. l.
This raised cover B, I connect tothe rim E, which is made in two parts, by narrow pieces, F, :is shown in bot-h figures. The ends of the two parts ofthe rim E lap loosely, as is also Ashown in the iigures. By this of the cover 1 l manner of connecting the?,n coverB wit-h the rim Eit will be seen that the rim moy be mensurnbly conti acted or vanwenden, and thus thepvssher rbe inode te lia boilers of diiierent sizes. l
In using my device I plf'ce it inside of the boiler, and fill with water till it Irenc-hes the lower edge ot' the cover B; then prepare the articles to be washed-feld them smoothly, und puck them on the uppersiiie-of the washer, and sons to extend close to the inner sides. of thev boiler and labout the tube.
As the water becomes heated and boils, thel impor,
steam, and water will follow thein'cline on the under;
side of the cover, rise.. up through the tubc, strike against the deectrsf),l und be thrownont hier/.lu v
direction toward the inner ends of the boiler, und over the clothes on the washer, and will then pziss down through 4the articles and the pieces F, and ithen'ui! :nl before, ,thus making and keeping up a, contnnousfeitcuit.v This may be continued for thirty minutes, 'when the clothes can lbe taken out, and all the dirt rinsed from them without ahy hard rubbing.
Having thus described myinvention,
What I claim 1. A steam clotheswashed A, having the ends of its cover B bent looselyvzibout the free ends of the rim E, and its sides connected tothe sides of the rim by the bent strips or pieces F, as herein shown and v(le-f scribed. Y
2. In combination with the covervB nud tnbeO, tho cap D, provded'with the detlectors E, vthe whole con-l structed and arranged substantially as and forv the purpose setvforth.
f' MARTIN T. LAME.
