.FUEL-IGNITER.
Loot ma.
Application filed January 13, 1911.
To @ZZ whom it may con Be it. known that l', Nieman A. Dran, a citizen oit the United States, residing at' St. Louis, in the State ot Missouri, have invented a new and use'tul Improvement in lfuel-l`gniters, ot `which the tollowing is a specilitmtion.
My invention relates to means i'or igniting Atuel contained in a hard coal or other stove, lire-grate, or other lire-box, and has 'for its object. to provide a portable device by which the t'uel may be readily and quickly ignited Vwithout the use otv wood or other kindling material as at present.
lt. consists in features ot novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, re'lerenee being had to the aecon'lpanying drawing 'torining part: of this speeitication, whereon,
Figure l, is a vertieal longitudinal section through my improved fuel igniter on line 1, l, in Fig. Q; Fig. 2, a top plan thereof, and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section to enlarged scale through the igniter7 on line Il, 3, in llig. 2.
Like letters and numerals ot reterenee denote like parts in all the figures.
n. represents my 'improved ilnel igniter which consists ot a metallie pipe 1 ot suitable length and diameter for portability, and ot sutlieient thickness oit' wall to insure its strength and rigidity when handled as hereinafter more particularly ret'erred to.
The pipe 11A is adapted at one end by lla t toning as shown to 'torm a preferably lanshaped outlet 2, or otherwise provided thereat `with a suitable nozzle, the other end o'l1 the pipe l being preitferably tapered as shown. or otherwise adapted externally, so that when inserted within the open end ot' a rubber or other flexible tube or hose (broken away) E, the latter will be elastically held thereon in air-tight eonnection with thepipe 1, the other end (not shown) ot the tiexible tube 3 being' adapted for conneetion with an ordinary illuminating gas jet burner, or other gas supply outlet, provided with a stop cock or other regulating device.
In operation, the pipe l being held by the hand and gas admitted thereiuto through the flexible tube 53, and ignited at its outletl Q. the outlet end portion Q ol the pipe l is then inserted between or beneath the tiregrate bars ot" the stove or other tire-box and the tlame ot the gas issuing 'from the pipe 1 directed against. and among the coal or other t'uel. contained therein, where- Speccation of Letters Patent.

by the latter is readily and quickly ignited without the use ot the ordinary underlying kindling material, the ignition being more rapidly etl'ected by agitating and changing the position oit the outlet end portion :l ot the pipe 1 among the coal, the pipe thereby operating practically as a substitute l'or the ordinary poker.
For regulating the llow and intensity o'tE the gas llame. l prel'erably torm a circular opening At through the wall ot the pipe l at a convenient distance trom its outlet end 2 lor admitting air to the interior ot' the pipe V1, the opening flbeing closed, and opened to any desired extent, by any suitable means, pre't'erably, as shown, by the end ot' a screw 5 which is adapted to operate through a correspondingly screw-threaded lug or bracket which is located opposite to, and at. a suitable distance trom the opening 1t, the lug t3 having a toot or flange seeured to the outside ot the pipe l by brazing or otherwise. and the screw 5 having a handle 7 beyond the, lug (l 'tor rotating the screw 5 in either direction and thereby moving its t'ree end to or it'rom the opening 1t, and so closing or opening the same as desired.
'lhe advantages o't my deviee are` lightness and simplicity, portableness and facility ot handling; also, by its use, when the eoal in a stove has been previously ignited in the ordinary manner. and subsequently, owing to neglect or inetlicieney ot the kindling material used, becomes dead as oilten happens, it' can be readily and quickly reignited without the necessity o'ti removing it lrom the stove and relaying, thereby obviating the trouble and dirti. caused by such removal. llin'thermore, the device `can be used 'tor heating water and other purpose when the stove is unavailable, in ease of sickness or other emergency.
that l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters latenti is:-
'l. A device ol the class described, comprising a metal pipe-` one. end of which is Yformed into a nozzle. and the opposite end adapted to receive a flexible tube, there being an air inlet opening termed through the lwall ol the. pipe intermediate ot the ends thereo't, a bracket' on the pipe. adjacentthe opening therein, and an adjustable member on said bracket adapted to elose the opening and to control the passage ot air therethrough.
Q, device ot the class described, comprising a metal pipe having one end formed point of which screw is adapted to enter and into a nozzle and the opposite end adapted .close the opening in the pipe.
to receive a flexible tube, there being` an air inlet opening formed through the Wall of WILLIAM A DYER' the pipe intermediate of its ends, a bracket /Vitnesses:
Xed on the pipe adjacent the opening, and HAL C. BELLVILLE,
a screw operating through said bracket, the EDWARD WV. FUSSELL.
