LEVER-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1911.
Application filed August 13, 1910. Serial No. 576,974.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE F. DANIEL- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the'application of latches to levers of agricultural machines and the like it is desirable that they be as light and durable as possible and that they be so designed as to aord a smooth grip for the users hand.
This invention relates to latches for levers on machines arranged to prevent tearing or pinching of the hand and designed to give strength with lightness of construction and durability.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a lever provided with a latch that embodies features of the invention and is shown in longitudinal section and in closed position; Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the latch.
As herein illustrated the latch is formed of a blank of sheet metal, malleable iron or other suitable material having a body l with a pair of lateral ears 2 provided with apertures for a pivot pin 3. The blank is folded along its medial axis to bring the ears into parallel relation, the edges of the body being smoothly rounded and the upper end marginal portion 4 being likewise rounded and proportioned to close smoothly over the end of a lever 5 to which it may be securedk by the pivot pin 3. A stiffening rib 6 is pressed out from or formed on the body of the blank to prevent springing of the ears outwardly. A tongue 7 is struck out of the body of the blank adjacent the rib 6 and is inrolled toward the lower end 8 thereof. This forms a cylindrical bearing surface for the link 9 whose hooked end is passed through the aperture formed by the severing of the tongue from the body. Or the tongue may be formed orf the end of the blank and inrolled. By this method of construction a light, rigid and durable latch is obtained whose rounded upper portions form. a substantially unbroken continuation of the upper end of the lever to which the latch may be applied so that the users hand is not torn or pinched by the edges thereof.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction maybe made without departing from the spirit ofthe invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is 1. A lever latch comprising a sheet meta-l body, oppositely disposed, lateral, apertured pivot ears thereon, a transverse stiffening rib formed up in the body adjacent the ears, the body being bent along its longitudinal axis with the ears in substantially parallel spaced relation, the upper end marginal portion being exteriorly rounded and slightly inturned, and a tongue struck out of the body near the ears and inrolled toward theadjacent end thereof.
2. A lever latch comprising a sheet metal body having oppositely disposed lateral pivot ears in parallel spaced relation near one end thereof, and a tongue formed longitudinally of the body at said end and rolled to form a bearing, the body being rounded along its longitudinal axis with its side and other end portions slightly incurved.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVE F. DANIELSON.
