To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED SONNTAG, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Dresden, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Covering, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a bed covering of novel construction, in which the covering sheet or blanket is raised a distance off the body of the person reposing on the bed. In this way free ventilation and exhalation from the pores is permitted, while the body remains unburdened from the objectionable weight of the covers. At the same time, the air exhaled will form a jacket beneath the sheet which will serve to keep the sleeper comfortably warm.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed covering embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a cross sec tion of a bed provided with the covering, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the covering.

Upon the bed is adapted to be placed a rear open work frame A extending along the sides and across the foot end of the bed. This frame is constructed of light material and is shown to consist of upper horizontal bars 10, lower horizontal bars 11 connecting upright stays 12, upper cross bars 13 connecting the two top bars 10 and an upper longitudinal bar 14. The width of frame A should correspond substantially to that of the bed, to which it may be removably secured in suitable manner, the drawing showing lower bars 11 to be provided with pins 15 that engage corresponding sockets 16 formed in the side rails 17 of the bed.

To rear frame A constructed as described, is hinged at 18, a front open work frame B, made substantially of like construction, but open at the back, so that when frame B is folded down, the two frames A, B will jointly form a pocket or trough over the bed sheet. To the forward ends of the lower bars 11 of frame B are pivoted at 19 the two shanks of a U-shaped bail C, adapted to be folded across the chest of the sleeper. The frames A, B, C constructed as described are covered at the sides, back and top of the bed, by a sheet, blanket, quilt or similar coverlet 20, which is removably secured to the frame by catches 20 so that the sheet may be removed and laundried. Intermediate frames A, B, coverlet 20 is slitted at its sides as at 21, to permit frame B to be freely folded. The front section 22 of the coverlet which extends from the foremost cross bar 13 to bail C forms a tapering hood which, while permitting the bail to be folded, so suspends it above the body of the sleeper as to prevent objectionable pressure. This front section 22 of the coverletis extended some distance beyond the bail to form a loose flap 23 adapted to rest on the shoulders and notched as at 24, to admit the head. To the lower bars 11 of frame B is further pivoted at 25 a bow 26 to which is attached the front end of a mosquito netting 27, the rear end of which is removably secured to coverlet 20, at 28.

In use frame B is folded up, the person seeking rest slips under frame A, and the frames B and C are lowered, so as to form the desired trough-shaped bed covering. In cold weather extra blankets may be spread over the frame, while in warmer weather, frame C, or frames C and B jointly may be folded up.

My improved bed covering is sanitary, comfortable, readily adjustible to diflerent temperatures, and of superior, cleanliness as it obviates objectionable contact between the main body of the coverlet and the person of the sleeper.

I claim:

1. A bed covering comprising a rear frame, a front frame hinged thereto, a coverlet spread over both frames and divided therebetween to permit the front frame to be folded on the rear frame.

2. A bed covering comprising a rear frame, a front frame hinged thereto, a bail hinged to the front frame, and a divided coverlet carried by the frames and bail.

3. A bed covering comprising a rear frame, a front frame hinged thereto, a bail and a bow hinged to the front frame, a divided coverlet carried by the frames and bail, and a mosquito netting secured to the bow.
