Letters Patent No. 100,106, dated February 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-GUNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom. 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. J BEASLEY, of Petersburg, in the county of Diuwiddie, and State of .Virginia, have invented a new and improved Alarm-Gun and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makeand use the same, refer ones being had-tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved alarm-gun.v
Figure 2 is a plan ortop view of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new alarm-gun which is so arranged that the barrel of the gun will also constitute the hammer for firing oh", and so that the gun will be discharged in the same direction in which the strings of the alarm apparatus are pulled.
The invention consists chiefly in so prolonging the barrel of the gun near the muzzle that it can be turned in either direction, and in providing it. with vents and nipples on opposite sides, so that either one will be discharged when brought in violent contact with afi'xed support.
' The invention also consists in the general arrange- 1 .ment of trigger-bar,- springs, 860., as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents the supporting-frame of the gun.
It is by a downward-projecting vertical pin, a, swiveled in.a supporting-bed, B, of suitable form, so that said frame A can be freely turned on the pin a.
The gun O is with its projecting trunnions l) b pivoted in ears 0 that project from the frame A.
The trunnions b are near the muzzle end of the gun, and have projecting arms d at their ends.
Springs D which are attached to the frame A fit against the sides of the polygonal arms at and serve to retain the barrel 0 in avertical position', and to throw y it into a horizontal position whenever it is in the least displaced. r There are two vents on opposite sides of the barrel and a nipple .is provided for each vent, as shown. When a cap is placed on each vent, the gun may be swung in either direction, and will, as it is violently swung horizontally by the action of the springs and the weight of the breech end, strike one cap against one of two lugs f projecting from the frame A, thereby exploding the charge.
The barrel thereby also serves as hammer.
The displacement of the gun from the vertical position can be produced by suitable means.
One device for this purpose is shown in the drawing. It consists of a sliding bar, E, which has a-notch adapted to receive a lug, 9, that projects from one trunnion of the gun. In whatever direction the rod E is pulled will the lug be drawn, and the muzzle of the gun directed While discharging.
The rod may be connected with strings or other devices constituting the alarm apparatus.
Having thus described my invention,
' What I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r 1. An alarm-gun which is provided with double vents and nipples, and so arranged that its barrel will also constitute the hammer, substantially as herein shown and described.
2.. The combination of the notched sliding rod E with the pivoted double-vent gun O, springs D D, and
frame A, all arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
