INFANTS CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Application filed April 25, 1910. Serial No. 557,507.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE E.
Hlm'sorm, a citizen of the United States, re-
skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an infants chair and more particularly to the class of supplemental seat attachments for the ordinary chairs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an infants chair in which a seat having arms and a back may be conveniently and detachably mounted upon an ordinary chair for its occupancy by an infant or child so as to enable the infant or child to be properly seated at a table without requiring the use of the ordinary high chair.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this character which may be conveniently and quickly clamped to the seat portion of an ordinary chair so that it may be occupied by an infant or child, the clamps being extensible to permit the chair to be mounted upon ordinary chairs of difl'erent sizes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a chair of this character in which an infant or a child may be conveniently seated by superimposing the attachment upon the seat portion of an ordinary chair thereby obviating the necessity of a high chair when it is desired to seat the child at a table.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a supplemental chair in which a plurality of extensible clamping members are connected therewith so that the said supplemental chair may be securely and detachably fastened to the seat portion of an ordinary chair so that the supplemental chair may be used by an infant or child.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of an ordinary chair with the supplemental chair mounted thereon. Fig, 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sec tional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the supplemental chair removed from the ordinary chair. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through the seat portion of the supplemental chair.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the. several views in the drawings.
' Referring to the drawings by numerals 6 designates generally a chair of the ordinary well-known construction having legs 7, a seat 8 from which rises a back section 9, the legs being braced in the usual manner. It is of course to be understood that this style of chair is merely shown to illustrate the manner of mounting the supplemental chair forming the subject'matter of the present invention which will be hereinafter more fully described. a
The supplemental or infants chair comprises a seat 10 which is preferably of rectangular shape, although the same may be of any other desirable shape as desired and from the seat 10 near its edge rises a back section 11 to which latter and the seat 10 are connected side arms 12 so that an infant or child seated between the arms 12 will be prevented from falling to either side of the supplemental chair when the latter is superimposed upon the seat port-ion of the ordinary chair.
Depending from the face of the bottom 10 at opposite side edges thereof are vertical side sections 18 between which is arranged a cross brace 14, the same being connected to the under face of the bot-tom and also to the inner faces of the side sections so as to strengthen the same. The depth of this brace 14 is materially less than the depth of the side sections 13 and secured to the under face of the said brace 14 are independent rows of guide eyes 15 in which are slidably mounted displaceable rods 16 each being surrounded by a coiled retractile spring 17 the same having one end fixed to the rod 16 While its opposite end terminates in a hook 18 detachably engaging a staple 19 so that the said rod and spring may be detached at will. The rods 16 have their outer end portions passed through suitable apertures in the side sections 13 and upon these outer free ends of the rods 16 are fixed clamping jaws 19 each being provided at its inner face with a resilient covering 20 said jaws 19 being adapted to frictionally engage with the opposite side edges of the seat portion 7 of the ordinary chair so as to hold the supplemental chair in superimposed position thereon.
Mounted in the inner faces of the side sections 13 are spaced alining eyes 21 in which are mounted slidable keepers 22 each having its forward end bent at right angles to form an engaging jaw 23 and upon this jaw is mounted a resilient sleeve 24. These jaws 23 are adapted to frictionally contact with the front edge of the ordinary chair 7. At the inner ends of these keeper members 22 are mounted detachable heads 26 the;
latter working in elongated slots 27 so as to engage the end walls of the said slots to limit the movement of the said keeper members. These keeper members are also duplicated at the rear of the chair so as to embrace the rear edge of the seat 7 of the ordinary chair 6.
Secured to the lower edges of the side sections 13 and coextensive therewith are resilient strips 28 the same preventing the scratching or moving of the chair seat 7 when the supplemental chair is superimposed thereon.
It is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly apparent Without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is A supplemental chair including a seat depending members secured to the lower face of said seat at each side of the latter, spring rods slidably mounted in said members, gripping devices carried by the outer ends of said spring rods adapted to engage with the side edges of a chair seat a pair of rods rotatably and slidably mounted on the inner face of each of said members said rods being provided with cranked outer ends adapted to engage'respectively the forward and rear edges of a chair seat, and enlarged heads on the inner ends of each of said rods, said members being provided on their inner faces with elongated recesses receiving said heads to limit the sliding movement of said rods.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, inpresence of two witnesses.
