WILMER H. BRISSETTE, OF SARANAC, NEW YORK.
HA'ME AND TRACE CONNECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILMER H. BRIS- snr'rn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saranac, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame and Trace Connectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved hame and trace connector for connecting the front end of a trace to a hame and so as to permit the trace to be adjusted vertically as may be required to shift the draft stress from one part of the hame to another, and thereby ease the collar on the neck of the horse, and prevent the horses shoulders from being rubbed and rendered sore, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure l is'an elevation of a portion of a hame and showing my improved trace connector in connection with the hame, and with the front end of a trace. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of one of the studs.
The hame 1 is of the usual, or may be of any suitable construction. In accordance with my invention, I provide the hame at points suitable distances from its lower end with a pair of studs 2, 3, which extend outwardly therefrom, and are suitably spaced apart, with the stud 2 above the stud 3. Each of the said studs has a shank 41, which extends through the hame, to the inner end of which shank is riveted a cap 5 by upsetting or swaging the inner end of the shank. Each stud has a head 6 at its outer end.
A connector bolt 7 is disposed in a central opening in the head of the upper stud 2, and has an enlarged head 8 which bears on the head of said stud, and said connector bolt has a reduced threaded portion 9 at its lower end which is screwed in a threaded opening in the head of the lower stud 3. The said connector bolt is provided in one side with a longitudinal groove 10, the bottom of which is provided with a series of depressions 11. The front end of the trace Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 599,282.
12 is connected by a bolt 13 to a trace holder 14, the said trace holder having a fork, the fork arms 15 of which are provided with openings in which the said bolt 13 is inserted, the lower end of the said bolt being secured in the threaded opening in the lower fork arm. The head 16 of the trace holder has an opening through which the connector bolt extends, and the said head is movable vertically on the connector bolt and is held at any desired adjustment thereon by means of a pair of collars 17. The said collars bear respectively above and below the head of the trace holder, and have openings through which the connector bolt on tends, and each of the said collars is pro vided in one side with a threaded opening in which is a set screw 18, the inner ends of the said set screws being disposed in the groove 10 of the connector bolt and engaged with certain of the depressions 11 thereof, so that the said set screws serve to secure the collars and hence also the trace holder at any desired vertical adjustment on the connector bolt. It will be understood that to adjust the trace holder it is only necessary to first loosen the set screws, then move the collars together with the trace holder to the desired point and then tighten up the set screws so as to reengage them with depressions in the bottom of the groove of the connector bolt.
My improved devices enable a trace to be connected to a hame so that the same may be shoved up or down as may be required to ease the collar onthe neck of the animal and prevent the rubbing of the shoulders and the formation of sores.
I claim v 1. Ina device of the class described, a hame having upper and lower studs projecting outwardly therefrom, a connector bolt connecting the said studs, and detach able therefrom, said bolt extending through an opening in and having a head bearing on the upper stud, having a reduced portion at its lower end threaded in an opening in the lower stud and being further provided with a longitudinal groove, a trace holder having a head provided with an opening through which the connector bolt extends, said trace holder being movable on the bolt longitudinally of the latter and also pivotally thereon, collars on the bolt and disposed respectively at the upper and lower sides of the head of the trace holder, the
said collars having set screws engaging the groove of the connector bolt.
2. In a device of the class described, a hame having upper and lower studs projecting outwardly therefrom, a connector bolt connecting the said studs, and detachable therefrom, said bolt extending through an opening in and having a head bearing on the upper stud, having a reduced portion at its lower end threaded in an opening in the lower stud and being further provided with a longitudinal groove, a trace holder having a head provided with an opening through which the connector bolt extends, said trace holder being movable on Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
the bolt longitudinal of the latter and also pivotally thereon, collars on the bolt and disposed respectively at the upper and lower sides of the head of the trace holder, the said collars having set screws engaging the groove of the connector bolt, the said bolt being provided with depressions in the bottom of the groove and the inner ends of the set screws engaging certain of the said depressions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
