BUGGY-EVENER.

To all whom 'it may concern.'

Be it known that I, EMIL A. KAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brush, in the county of Morgan and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Eveners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in buggy eveners.

The object of my invention is to provide a light and neat evener, especially adapted to be used in connection with two horse buggies, so arranged that the swingletrees will be yieldingly carried.

Another object of my invention is to provide the tongue of a vehicle with two superposed carrying members, between which the swingletrees are pivotally held.

Wlth the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts inthe several views, Figure 1 shows a top view of a buggy evener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view through the swingletree. Fig. 3 is an elevational view.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 5 designates the tongue of a buggy, and 6 the bolt by means of which the carrying members are pivotally connected to the tongue.

In place of a double tree, I employ a resilient carrying means in the form of two, preferably flat steel bars between which is held the collar, as well as the swingletrees.

Thelower bar or member, includes a flat, central section 8, provided with a bo-lt opening, from which the bar is continued in opposite directions to form the two oppositely positioned bending sections 10 which extend in a plane at right angles to the central section as shown. Each bending section 10, of the bar, is bent horizontal as shown at 12 and provided with a pin openin This member is arranged to be secured a ove the Specification of Letters Patent.

The top member as used in my invention is in the form of a bar having the flat, centrai portion 14C provided with a centrally positioned bolt opening to receive the bolt 6. From this central portion 14, the bar is continued in opposite direction in the two upwardly curving bowed portions 15, from which this top member is continued in the two fiat bending sections 18, these sections 18 again extending in a plane at right angles to the plate of the central portion 14:. Each end of this upper bar is in the form of a laterally extending threaded pin 20 arranged to extend through the pin openings within the lower member as disclosed.

The swingletrees 25 are pivotally carried upon the pins 20 a washer 21 being secured to the p-ins at their bases. The bowed portions 15 are so positioned that the traces 26 are held directly below the same so that the securing straps 28 usually employed may be readily inserted within the trace holding members 30, these arched portions also permitting the trace being readily secured to or detached from the inner ends of the swingletrees.

The swingletrees in an evener as above constructed, are yieldingly carried so that the shocks and jars incident to the vehicle coming into contact with obstructions are not carried to the collar of the animal, but are compensated by means of the carrying members as described. The swingletrees can be readily removed or replaced b-y simply detaching the nuts 2O secured to the pins 21.

The evener is further simple and inexpensive in construction and both durable and eiiicient in operation.

Having thusdescribed my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a lower resilient carrying member, of an upper resilient carrying member, both of which are similarly con* structed and yielding to the draft of the horses, said upper member having its opposite ends in the form of threaded pins arranged to extend through suitable openings within said lower member.

2. The herein described evener, comprising a base bar having a iat central section provided with abolt opening, from which the bar is continued in opposite directions to form two oppositely positioned bending sections which extend in a plane at right angles to said central section, each end of the bar again being bent horizontal and provided with a pin opening, of a top bar comprising a flat central portion having a bolt opening from which the bar is continued in opposite directions in two upwardly curving bowed portions from which this top member is continued in two 'flat bending sections extending in a plane at right angles to the plane of said central portion, said upper bar ending at each end in a laterally extending threaded pin arranged to extend through the pin openings within said base bar, and nuts upon said pin.
