FAN.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A110. 15, 1911.
Application led April 15, 1910. Serial No. 555,711.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. CAV- ALLY, J r., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fans and its object resides in the provision of a device of this class which comprises in association with an elongate handle, a blade which may be folded to a size small enough to be carried in the pocket. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which- Figure 1, represents an elevation of my improved fan, Fig. 2, a similar view with t-he fan blade folded, Fig. 3, a longitudinal section taken along the line 3 3, Fig. l, and Fig. 4, a transverse section taken along the line 4-4, Fig. 2, and drawn to an exaggerated scale. Q
Referring to the drawings by numerical reference characters, the numeral 2 designates a handle or stick which carries upon one of its extremities, a transversely disposed blade 3. The latter is composed of three articulately connected members 4, 5 and 6, the middle one of which extends at its lower edge, within a slit in the handle 2 to which itis rigidly secured by means of a rivet 7 'This rivet which extends preferably through the center of the body member 4, furthermore serves as a pivot fora locking bar 8 which being disposed upon the face of the blade 3, may be employed vto maintain its movable members in their extended condition.
The end-sections 5 and 6 ofthe blade 3 are connected with the relatively stationary body-section 4, along weakened lines 4a which allow the said sections to be folded upon the face of the middle one, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. One of the end-sections, 6, is provided with an outwardly extending tongue 10 which when the parts are folded, is inserted into a slot 12 in the opposite end-section 5 and which thus serves to lock the members in their folded position. To maintain the members of the blade 3 in their operative Astate while the fan is in use as shown in Fig. l, the bar S isv placed across the lines 4a while, when the parts are folded, the bar extends substantially parallel to the said lines as shown in Fig. 2.
Although the various parts comprised in my improved fan may be made of any suitable material, I prefer to use card-board in the'manufacture of the blade 3 and the locking bar 8, while the handle 2 may be composed of wood and the rivet 7 of metal.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fan comprising in combination, a handle, a blade composed of three members separated by weakened lines which while permitting the outer members to be folded upon the middle member which is secured to said handle, resiliently oppose their movement in the opposite direction, and a locking bar pivotally mountedupon the said middle member, so as to be held in any selected position in frictional contact therewith and adapted to be placed across the said lines when the` members are in their extended position.
2. A fan comprising in combination, a handle, a blade composed of three members extending normally in one plane and articu- -lately connected whereby the outer members may be folded in one direction only upon the middle member which is secured upon the said handle, and a locking bar pivotally mounted upon the middle member so as to be held in any selected position in frictional contact therewith and adapted to be placed across the lines of articulation when the three members extend in the said plane.
3. A fan comprising in combination, a
handle, a flexible blade composed of three members extending normally in one plane and articulately connected whereby the outer members may be folded in one direction only upon the middle member which is secured upon the said handle, and a locking bar pivotally mounted upon the middle member in frictional contact therewith and adapted to be placed across the lines of articulation when the three members extend in the said plane, one of the said outer members having In testimony Wherof I have aliXed my a slotdand the other outerfmember, a tongue signature in presence of two Witnesses.
exten ing in the plane o the said member in oblique relation to the said slot and FREDERICK' LEO CAVALLY JR' adapted to be inserted thereinto by flexing Witnesses the said outer members While they are being G. J. ROLLANDET,
folded upon the middle one. E. M. KREMPEL.
