LEVELING INSTRUMENT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING L. GRIswoLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Imrovements in Leveling Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to measuring devices and more particularly to a leveling instrument adapted for use on chalk lines and the like. I am aware that instruments have been in use for a similar purpose, and it has been found by experience that all of these instruments are so heavy that they cause the line to sag to such a great extent that the instruments become useless. Another insurmountable difiiculty arises when these instruments have been employed, for the reason that the levels now upon the market have not covered a suflicient length of the line to cause the measurement to be ac curate. -In other words as they are only a few inches in length the line might be shown to be level in one place whereas if the instrument were moved to another place the leveling glass would show the line to be at a considerable angle from the horizontal.
It is the object of my invention to overcome these difiiculties, particularly the last mentioned, by providing an instrument which is not only very light in weight but which shall have its arms of such a length that it will be supported from the line at two points comparatively distant from one another thus insuring accuracy in the measusement.
With the foregoing and other objects in View my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my instrument showing it attached to a chalk line and fully illustrating the great spread of the arms. Fig. 2 is a detailed View of the reverse side of one of the arms. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view showing how the level glass is supported and Fig. 4: illustrates a modification of Fig. 3.

construct a device preferably of aluminum having two arms 1 and 2 each of which arms is comparatively lengthened. It will be seen that for a considerable distance along their length these arms extend approximately parallel to the chalk line A. This construction is necessary in order to obtain the highest degree of efficiency in the instrument. The outer ends 3 and 4 respectively of the arms are turned upwardly and are considerably broader than are said arms. By making the ends 3 and 4 of considerable breadth so as to extend a comparatively long distance along the line A, I secure a result which is not obtainable when the instrument is simply hooked to the line by means of a wire hook or similar fastening, for by my construction the line is leveled not only between the points 3 and 4, but any variation of the remainder of the line from the level between these points is readily seen and can therefore be effectively corrected. The ends 3 and 4t are'bent over as at 5 so as to easily receive the line and the bent over portion is provided with a recess 6 which if desired may be used to receive the line, in which case the instrument would be held stationary by the stress upon the line and prevented from sliding back and forth.
Inasmuch as I prefer to make this instrument out of aluminum or other light metal it is advisable to reinforce the edges by forming the rolls or ribs 7 along the same.
The level glass 10 is carried in a tubing 8 which has a portion 9 cut away in order that the glass may be read. This tube may either be formed integral with the arms 1 and 2 as shown in Fig. 3 where it is made simply by rolling into a tubular form an extension of said arms or it may be made of a separate piece of metal rolled into tubular form and provided with lips 12 adapted to be connected to the arms by means of a rivet or other connection 13. The glass is held in place by means of a set-screw 11 which fits into one end of said tube, the other end being closed.
I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A leveling tool comprising oppositely extending arms made of sheet-metal, the edges of said arms being rolled whereby said arms are reinforced, the outer ends of said arms being comparatively broadened and bent into the form of hooks, and a level glass carried by the inner ends of said arms.
2. In a leveling instrument of the character described, a tubular member adapted to receive a level glass, sheet-metal arms connected to said tubular member and eX- 'i tending in opposite directions therefrom.

A leveling instrument adapted to be applied to chalk lines comprising a tubular member adapted to receive a level glass, and sheet-metal arms connected to said tubular member and extending in opposite directions therefrom approximately parallel to said chalk line, said arms being comparatively long whereby said instrument is adapted for use upon a relatively long length of the chalk line, the outer ends of said arms being considerably broader than said arms and formed into hooks, the broad portions of said hooks being adapted to rest on said chalk line whereby the latter is prevented from being drawn out of a straight line, said hooks having recesses formed therein.
