SAMUEL EIVIANDLEBAUM, 0F ST. LOlS, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 100,050, dated February 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMMERCIAL PORTFOLIOS.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. MANDLEBAUM, of St. Louis, in the county of St'. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Commercial Portfolios; and I do dereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
lhis'invention retates to a portfolio or book-casing arranged to contain a series of rotary tables, showing the duc day of notes or bills of exchange, an interest table, and a compartment for note or bill-books, in which notes and bills w-ill be preserved between the pages of the bill-books so as to indicate the maturity of said notes, said bill-book being otherwise arranged with tables for determining the time expired since the date of a note or bill; all of which my said portfolio present-s in a neat and economical form, so as to be herein an improvedand useful device.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use my said portfolio, I'Will now more fully describe the same, referring herein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the said portfolio opened, presenting one part of its inner arrangement.
Figure 2 is a plan, showing a second part of the said inner arrangement.
Figure 3 is a plan of a bill-book opened, so as to show .its `contents and indicate'its use.
My said portfolio has an exterior case, usually in book-shape, of leather, wood, or other lsuitable material, and (by preference) provided with a lock and key, so as to inclose its contents with some security.
In one part, A1, of said case will be arranged a numyber of cylinders, B, which maybe readily turned upon proper journals by the disk-wheels O. Usually there are as many cylinders B as there are months in the year.
In the cover of the book-casing A1 is a slit, a, to display any one of the columns of figures marked upon saidcylinders. Adjoining the slit a is arranged (usually pasted or glued) a strip of card, a', marked Note dated (January l, 2, 3, and so on, or February l, 2, 3, and so om) and thus, in case there are twelve cyl inders adjoining each, there will be a card for eac-h month to indicate each day of the year.
The columns upon the cylinderB are headed l day due, 3 days due,7 and so on; .1 month due, 2 months due, 3 months due, and the due date corresponding to said heading and to each date-day marked upon the cards a', so that by said arrangement the duc date of notes dated and day of the year, and
due in theusual time for which notes or bills of exchange are ordinarily made and given, will be readily exhibited, the operator merely turning the cylinder B to bring the proper due column in line and exposure with the date-day card.
There is then also aproper indicator for exceptional times, ksuch as leap-year and 29th of February dates, as indicated by asterisks upon the due dates effected by these abnormities in the time division, generally as shown in iig. 1.
The due-date7 table will be protected by a glass cover or in any other suitable manner.
Upon the other part ot' the portiblio-casing AZI attach the hingedboard pages D one face, Dl, whereof has a slate, E, or other tablet for figuring upon. The inner faces D2 thereof, when opened to view, as shown in iig. 2, presents the interest-table F. This has a suitable metallic slide, f, so as to point out the interest sum for any principal sum to which thev said table cxtendsf In said table the principal at interest heads the columns, the interest amounts follow beneath, andthe time for which the interest has thus been computed and tahularizcd is marked upon the slide f.
The board leavesbeing turned hack reveal the lower compartment of the portfolio A2, in which the billbooks G are placed, and which may otherwise serve as a receptacle for documents generally.
Said bill-books are marked with the names of the months, and have each as many pages as there are days in the month, and the numeral of each day is edge-marked on the page in the usual manner. The use hereof is then to enable the user to place each note between the proper pages which indicate the duc date thereof.
In the rear of the books G are the tables H for reckoning expired time77 on notes. In, these the, heading is From January or February (or other month, 1,2, 3, and so ou, and the vertical columns are marked To February, March, and so on, l, 2, 3, and so on.) The figures opposite these marginal columns then indicate the expired time from the one to the other day.
In order to enable the operator to readily discover the proper' iigurc in the place desired, I use a hingejointcd square, I, the shanks of which are pivotcd at li, so as to fold up when packed in the ease A2.
A bent edge of one shank of the square holds the two shanks to a rectangular position when tobe used, then herewith, as indicated in fig. 3, the discovery of the proper figure is easy and certain.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I/Vhat I claim, is-
1. The arrangement of the cylinders B, disk-whecls a', and the ease A1, substantially as and for the pur- G and their gure columns, with the .slit A, date-card In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of August, 1869, in the prespose described.
ence of- 2. The oase A, hinged board D, their slate face D1, and interest-tnbie faces F, arranged substantially as set forth. Witnesses 3. The bill-books G, page-marked and arranged as GEO. P. HERTHEL, described, when combined with an expired-time GEO. W. MANDLEBAUM. table H, and a square I, substantially as set forth.
' S. E. MANDLEBAUM.
