Description
NITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
A. O. JUDSON, OF GRANDRAPIDS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO E. O. JUDSON.
IM PROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
Spcciliention forming part of Letters Patent No. 100,042, dated February 22, 1870.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,A. C. JUDsoN, of Grand Rapids, in the county ot' Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
FigureV l represents a side view of. my improved plow. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification of the same. Fig. 4 is an inverted 'plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention relates to plows, which I provide with wooden standards which completely till the space between the mold-board and land-side, thereby strengthening the last two, so that they may be made thinner than heretofore, and the use ot' the handles and braces usually employed dispensed with and the invention consists in the construction and arrangementof the mold-board, land-side, and standard, as hereinafter specified.
i In the' drawings the land-side is represented as extended forward beyond the front edge of the mold-board B, which can be strengthened by forming a iiat rlange, a, on the front end ot' the mold-board and rivet-ing the saine to the land-side, as shown.
rEhe extended land-side has a beveled fi-'ont' cutting-edge, b, which will cut the sods before they are turned down by the mold-board. The extended cutting part will also serve as a purchase for the lifting or turning part.
The invention consists, also, in extending the lower part of the wooden standard O forward to the junction of the mold-board and land-side by pointing such lower part of the standard and causing it to till the entire space between the said land-side and mold-board. Thev wood will thereby serve to strengthen and stien the moldboard without materially increasing the weight. Lighter material may consequently be used on the sides of the plow, and still they will last longer than on the hollow plow.
The saine improvement is applicable to the double-shovel plow shown in Figs. l and 2, in which the standard O extends forward to the junction of the two shovels or mold-boards D D, as shown, strengthening and bracing both. This construction, it will be observed, avoids the necessity of handles bent and bolted to the mold-board and land-side, since the standard C extends or is designed to be cxtended upward at such an angle as to allow short handles to be conveniently attached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- entrEhe improved plow formed by the land-side A, extended to form a cutting-edge, b, the mold-board B, and the standard O, tillin g the entire space between said mold-board and land-side, and extending rearward and upward at the angle shown to allow the attachment of handles thereto, all constructed and arranged as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
A. C. JUDSON.
Titnessesz JAS. J. Vonnris, leaner. POWELL.
