Description

H. H. CALVIN.
AIR CONTROLLER F03 WARM AIR FURNACES. APPLICATION FILED AUG.6. 1910.

HIRAM H. CALVIN, OF- TOLEDO, OHIO.
AIR-CONTROLLER FOR WARM-AIR FURNACES.
Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Application filed August 6, 1910. Serial 110.575,!)58.
specification.
My invention relates to improvements in air warmers by combining therewith a series of adjustable deflector plates interposed between the fire-box and the outer casing thereof; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to increase the absorptlon of' heat by the current volume of air; and, second, to equalize the temperature throughout the entire current volume.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which a Figure 1 is a vertical section of an air warmer on the line Z. Z. Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section of same online Y. Y. Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the indicator and its connection to the deflector plates.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The outer casing 1, the fire-box 2, the free-' air inlet 8, and the warmed air outlets 9, are
the constituent parts of an air warmer necessarily shown but for which no invention is claimed.
In my invention 4 designates a series of adjustable interposed deflector plates by the combined eyelets and arbors 3 secured thereto and having bearings 3, radially concentric, in the fire-box and the outer casing and connected to each other .by' connecting chains or rods 5 equidistant with the arbors. To the projecting end of the first in the series of arbors is loosely mounted the indicator plate 6 and secured to the outside of the casing 1; and rigidl projecting arbor end is t e combined lever and handle 7 in vertical alinement with deflector plate 4 to operate, support and'indicate the vertical or any desired angular.po-,
secured to said sitions of the deflector plates and when released the plates attain a vertical position by gravity.
I am not aware that, prior to my invention thereof, air warmers have been equipped with a series of deflector plates interposed at a height corresponding with the hottest portion of the-fire-box, and adjustable vertically and to any desired degree of angular position purposely causing the current volume of air passing through the air warmer to deflect from its natural vertical and short travel to a circuitous and longer travel thereby absorbing an increased amount of the heat and more evenly tempered at each of the outlets.
I therefore claim:
The combination of an air warmer of circular form including a fire-box and a casing spaced therefrom with air inlet and air outlets thereto with an inner series of bearings spaced around and. secured to the fire box at the height of -the heat zone thereof a corresponding series of outer bearings secured to the casing and concentric with the inner bearings to the fire box a series of arbors resting in said bearings a series of deflector plates secured one to each of said arbors with their major portions being be low the arbors so that the deflector plates will tend to a vertical position by gravity,
a series of connecting rods or links of length equal to the central spacing of the arbors and connected to the .tops of the deflector plates one to each and all, with, outward means attached to one of said arbors whereby to place and fix or release the deflector plates in unison at or from any angular position desired, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of August, 1910.
HIRAM H. CALVIN.
