Description

` Ingen/Z22 fm N PETERS FHUTO LTHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C tltttd tant attent (title-11e.y
JAMES H. FERGUSON, OF GREENVILLE, INDIANA.`
Letters Patent No. 100,022, dated February 22, 1870.
-.o- IMPROVED COLLAR AND HAME FOR HARNESS.
The Schedule -refen'ed to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:V
Be it known that I, JAMES H. FERGUSON, of Greenville, in the county of Floyd, and State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and improved Combined Haine and Collar; v'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to combined haines and collar, and consists in the combination of certain parts, as hereinafter. specified.
Figure l represents a front elevation of acollar and haines c'onstiuctedaccording to my improvement.
Figure 2 represents a section of the same, taken on the line a: :c of' tig.'1.
Similar letters'of reference' indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the parts of wood, armed with metal plates at the lower e'nds. These parts constitute the main portion ot' the hanies, and form also material portions ofone side of the'pads of the collar, the leather portion C thereof being tacked or otherwise fastened t0 the edges at D and E. p
These wood parts A are not permitted to rise as high as the collarbone ot' the shoulder ofthe animal, thereby preventing any undue pressure thereon, or on the muscles above that point.
The pads are stut'e-d as high as the wood parts A with coarse sawdust of soft wood, such as poplar, and above thispoint with moss.
F represents the sawdust, and
G, the moss.
The employment of sawdust of this character, together with the attachment ot' the pads to the wood parts, gives to these pads a peculiar' adaptation for use upon animals having sore breasts or shoulders, in that the sawdust can be very readily moved away from any particular part ofthe pad by pounding with `a hammer, so asv to lmalte a depression; then, by
screwing a wood-screw through the leather at the bottom of the depression and into the wood, the 4depression may be maintained as long as desired.y In
this way the pads may be so fixed as not to bear" on any sore place; and, when the place is cured, the
by straps buckled together, and a common collar-pad may be used under the joint to prevent injury to the neck.
I represents curved metallic extensions rising up from the top of the wood parts A, to support thereinrings. They are joined togethervat the top, where they lap, by a bolt, and this joint is made adjustable.'
At the bottom a bail, K, is employed for connect'- ing the two parts. f
This bail is hung from a pivot-bolt at L, and the other end slides under a staple, M, and is provided with key-holes or slots on the side next the plate B, through which a key, N, passes, tosecure it in place.
This bail is rigid, and prevents the two parts being pressed together when backing. It `serves the purposes of a breast-chain as Well asa fastening.
I am aware that connecting the upper ends of the hames by adjustable bars is not new, and I therefore disclaim it. f
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to securel by Let- Y 1. The combined haines and collar, consisting of the wooden parts A A, bail-connection K M N, pads E and G,jand extensions I I, all constructed and .ar-
ranged substantially as shown and described.
2. The bail K, pivoted at one end to one part of the saidcombined hames and collar, and connected with the other by the staple M and catch N, subst-an
