Abstract

This invention relates in general to light-water-moderated nuclear reactors where thorium is used as a fuel. The nuclear reactor includes the core with a large quantity of “nucleus-cover” cells; each of them has a nucleus central zone containing nucleus fuel elements and made of a material subject to nuclear disintegration including U-235, U-238 and a moderator, a ring-shaped cover zone which encircles the nucleus zone and contains cover fuel elements including thorium and enriched uranium or their oxides, as well as a moderator. The volumetric ratio of the moderator to the fuel in the nucleus zone makes up approximately 2.5 to 5.0, and the volumetric ratio of the moderator to the fuel in the cover zone is approximately 1.5 to 2.0, at that the content of enriched uranium at the cover fuel elements makes up 10 % or less.
