Abstract

An active matrix liquid crystal display includes first and second substrates, a liquid crystal layer, a counter electrode, a pixel electrode, and a light emitting diode. The first and second substrates are spaced apart from each other. The liquid crystal layer is between the first and second substrates and includes retardation in a range of 280 to 480 nanometers. The counter and pixel electrodes are formed on a surface of the first substrate. The pixel electrode generates an electric field in the liquid crystal layer with the counter electrode. The light emitting diode is configured to produce light having a colour coordinate x in a range of 0.27 to 0.32 and a colour coordinate y in a range of 0.25 to 0.33 on the C.I.E. chromaticity diagram.
