Description
本發明大致上係有關於資訊處理系統電源管理之領域,特別是用於多重資訊處理系統之電源管理的系統及方法。
隨著資訊之價值與用途的提升,個人與企業亦試圖尋求更多的方法來處理及儲存資訊。其中一種使用者所熟知的方法為資訊處理系統。資訊處理系統通常為企業、個人、或其他目的處理、編輯、儲存、及/或傳遞資訊或資料,進而使使用者可以利用該資訊之價值。由於技術與資訊之操作需要與需求會隨不同使用者或應用而改變,資訊處理系統亦會隨所處理之資訊、資訊處理之方式、被處理、儲存或傳遞之資訊量、及該資訊被處理、儲存或傳遞之速度與效率而改變。資訊處理系統中之變化允許資訊處理系統做為一般用途或為特定使用者或特定用途組態,如財務交易處理、航空公司定位、企業資料儲存、或全球通訊。此外,資訊處理系統可包括各種可以組態以處理、儲存、及傳遞資訊之硬體及軟體零件,並包括一或多種電腦系統、資料儲存系統、及網路系統。

跨多重資訊處理系統之電源管理在電源約束限制可用以操作該資訊處理系統之電力資源時可協助多重資訊處理系統之操作。為揭露之目的,資訊操作系統可包括任何可用以計算、分類、處理、傳輸、接收、擷取、產出、交換、儲存、顯示、表示、偵測、紀錄、重製、操作、或利用任何形式之資訊、情報、或資料以供企業、科學、控制或其他目的使用
的機構或機構總成。舉例來說,資訊操作系統可為一個人電腦、網路儲存裝置、或任何其他適當的裝置且可具有不同的尺寸、形狀、效能、功能及價格。該資訊操作系統可包括隨機存取記憶體(RAM)、一或多個處理資源如中央處理單元(CPU)或硬體或軟體控制邏輯、ROM、及/或其他類型之非揮發性記憶體。該資訊操作系統之附加零件可包括一或多個磁碟機、一或多個與外部裝置聯絡之網路埠、以及各種輸入及輸出(I/O)裝置如鍵盤、滑鼠、及影像顯示器。該資訊操作系統亦可包括一或多個可用以在各種硬體零件之間做傳輸聯絡之匯流排。

該等資訊處理系統12在該伺服器機架10中之操作的協調係
透過一與各該資訊處理系統12相連之局部管理控制器26而被管理。該等局部管理控制器26中之一者被指定做為監督跨該機架10中之各局部管理控制器26的共同管理控制器28。該等局部管理控制器26透過網路22或透過該等資訊處理系統12間之以“入-出”雛菊鏈(daisy chain)方式組態的直接電纜與該共同管理控制器28聯繫。各局部管理控制器26具有供其相關連資訊處理系統12所使用之功率消耗資訊,如最大功率消耗、相關連資訊處理系統12上之功率消耗零件的列表、或相關連資訊處理系統12上所消耗之功率

該共同管理控制器28依據多種功率消耗約束選擇性地實施
功率消耗限制。舉例來說,該共同管理控制器28在初次啟動或電源重新設定時監控該等資訊操作系統12,且如果可用電力資源不足以支援該資訊處理系統之操作,其將阻止該局部管理控制器26啟動其相關連系統。選擇性地,該共同管理控制器28允許該局部管理控制器26在一降低功率消耗模式下比方說以降低的處理器或記憶體速度啟動,如果電力在該降低功率消耗模式下足以支援其相關連資訊處理系統之操作的話。一電源管理控制台34允許資訊處理系統之使用者透過該共同管理控制器28對功率消耗模式做選擇性的組態。舉例來說,一使用者可以使一資訊操作系統12之優先權排列成高於另一資訊操作系統12,以便該共同管理控制器28可使具有較低優先權之系統降低功率消耗以讓具有較高優先權之系統操作,或者對選定資訊處理系統之特定零件如特定CPU排列優先權以使其在電力資源約束下以降低的時脈速度操作。在另一範例中,使用者可以對該電力資源表32組態以基於操作時間而具有不同的電力資源俾使該共同管理控制器28可以隨時間的過程選擇性地降低功率消耗以將整體功率消耗保持於一期望約束之中。
在又一範例中,該電源管理控制台34可平衡跨多重該伺服器機架10之功率消耗以調整功率消耗約束及可用性。
現在參考第2圖,一流程圖例示一多重資訊處理系統之功率
消耗管理的方法。該方法於步驟36處開始,首先將電源供應至一位於一伺服器機架上之資訊處理系統。於步驟38處,該資訊處理系統之該局部管理控制器在一輔助電源軌道上進行初始化,在步驟40處,將其最大組態電源公告至該資訊處理系統伺服器機架之該共同管理控制器。該最大組態電源為系統依據其現有物理條件預期消耗之功率的最大量且可儲存於一資訊處理系統中,該最大組態電源係從實際電源使用導出或由該共同管理控制器
從該資訊處理系統上之零件列表導出。在步驟42處,該共同管理控制器將該公告值加入機架電源之現有總值,亦即該機架上所有操作系統之最大組態電源值的加總,並將該總值與該最大總機架電源,亦即輸送至該機架中以供所有該資訊處理系統使用之電源的最大量,做一比較。如果在步驟44中,現有機架電源之總值與該公告電源沒有超過該機架最大電源,則該方法續行至步驟46,在該步驟中,該共同管理控制器將不受限操作之啟動同意送出給該局部管理控制器。
如果在步驟44中,現有機架電源之總值與該公告電源確實
超過該機架最大電源,則該方法繼續判斷是否同意該資訊處理系統之受限操作。在步驟48處,該共同管理控制器將一啟動拒絕送出給該局部管理控制器,且在步驟50處,亦將該最大可允許電源,亦即基於已經分配至該機架上之系統的電源量可輸送至一資訊處理系統之未分配電源的最大量,即該最大總機架電源減去該現有總機架電源。在步驟52處,該局部管理控制器判斷是否其相關連系統可以該共同管理控制器所通知之最大可允許電源於一節流狀態下,比方說藉由使CPU或記憶體操作節流之方式操作。在步驟54處,如果一節流狀態無法由該最大可允許電源支援,則該方法續行至步驟56,在該步驟中,該局部管理控制器將無法在該電源約束內操作之事實知會該共同管理控制器,且在步驟58處,關閉系統啟動。如果在步驟54中,在該最大可允許電源內支援操作之一節流狀態存在的話,則該方法續行至步驟60以使該局部管理控制器對該節流狀態組態,並續行至步驟62以使該局部管理控制器將其節流電源值公告給該共同管理控制器。從步驟62開始,該方法前往步驟42以確保具有充分的電源以在該節流狀態下操作該資訊處理系統。

者之功率消耗管理的方法。該方法於步驟64處開始,首先將電源供應至該系統然後續行至步驟66以便以輔助電源進行該局部管理控制器之初始化以及在步驟68及70處之初始化按鈕的選擇。在步驟72處,該局部管理控制器將其相關連資訊處理系統之最大組態電源公告至該共同管理控制器,且在步驟74處,等待該共同管理控制器之同意以啟動該資訊處理系統。如果

Claims (7)
- 一種用於管理橫跨複數個資訊處理系統之功率消耗的系統,該系統包含:複數個局部管理控制器,各局部管理控制器係與該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一者相關連,各局部管理控制器具有針對其相關連資訊處理系統之功率消耗資訊且可操作以選擇性在其相關連資訊處理系統處實施一或多個節流功率消耗模式;以及其中該等局部管理控制器中之一者被指定作為一共同管理控制器,該共同管理控制器係與該等複數個局部管理控制器中之各者介接;該共同管理控制器包含一定義於該系統中總最大可用功率之可用電力資源的電力資源表、以及一由該等局部管理控制器中之各者所個別提供的該等複數個資訊處理系統中之各者之功率消耗資訊的功率消耗表;該共同管理控制器係操作以選擇性地限制該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一或多者之操作以將該等複數個資訊處理系統之總功率消耗維持在該總最大可用功率之內,其中該電力資源表包含可由一使用者組配的以時間為基礎之功率約束;且該共同管理控制器係進一步被安排以在該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一或多者處提供以時間為基礎之選擇性限制俾符合由該使用者所組配的以時間為基礎之該功率約束, 而致能在該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一或多者的該選擇性限制操作;並且該系統進一步包含:一與該共同管理控制器介接之電源管理控制台,該電源管理控制台係可由該使用者組配以選擇性地安排該等複數個資訊處理系統的優先順序,或是選擇性地安排與該等資訊處理系統相關連的節流功率消耗模式之一或多個的優先順序,以便致能在該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一或多者的該選擇性限制操作。
- 如請求項1之系統,其中該共同管理控制器藉由在該等複數個資訊處理系統中之一或多者處選擇性地實施一節流功率消耗模式以選擇性地限制一或多個該等複數個資訊處理系統之操作。
- 如請求項2項之系統,其中該節流功率消耗模式包含時脈訊號之操縱以降低與該資訊處理系統相關連之一或多個處理構件之功率消耗。
- 如請求項3項之系統,其中該處理構件包含該資訊處理系統之一中央處理單元。
