Abstract

The ATM controller which can provide a high-quality data communication has a transfer means, a cell transmission control means, a cell classification determining means, a cell reception control means, and the selection means. The ATM controller performs the processing of the ATM layer and the AAL layer of the ATM protocol between transmission path and the terminal. The transfer means transfers the packet data between the terminal and the buffer memory. The cell transmission control means divides the packet data stored in the buffer memory or the memory into the data cell. Further, the cell transmission control means transmits the divided data cell to the ATM network side. The cell classification determining means determines whether or not the cell is a data cell by examining header part of the cell received from the ATM network side. The cell reception control means produces the packet data by assembling the data cell, and stores the produced packet data, in the buffer memory or the memory. The selection means selects either the memory in the terminal or the buffer memory, as the destination of the storage of the packet data produced by the cell reception control means and the destination of the storage of the packet data divided into the cell by the cell transmission control means, according to the character of traffic in the set ATM connection.
